10 Best Tips On Dietary Care During Fever!
Monsoon season has started and there are easy chances of catching cold, coughs, fever, diarrhoea, etc. Fever is a common sign of infection. When an infection occurs, the immune system will launch an attack to try to remove the cause. A high body temperature is a normal part of this reaction. After the monsoons are over, a number of vector borne diseases like dengue, malaria, chikungunya, swine flu etc seem to flourish.
You may have no appetite when you have a fever. However, it is very important to eat healthy food in order to have your body supplied with the energy and nutrients it need to fight the infections. There are certain foods that can speeded up the process of healing.

Foods that are hard to digest are a no-no during a fever because your digestive system is not in its best shape. Also, you should refrain from having foods that supply your body with no vitamins and minerals. The overall diet during viral infection should be light, easy to digest and full of fluids. Liquids in the form of hot soup or even plain water helps to excrete impurities. Food or any liquid consumed should be preferably warm.

Here are the list of do's and don'ts for the Dietary care of fevers

1) fever leads to lot of sweating. This results in fluid electrolyte imbalance in the body. Soups are a good choice as they re easily tolerated and will also help to replace any fluids and sodium that may have been lost. Take plenty of fluids in the form of water, soups, honey/ginger/tulsi tea to replenish the loss of fluids. Recommended intake of water in fever is 2-3 litres/day

2) due to fever we tend to loose a lot of calories. So we need to take a healthy carbohydrates diet consisting of cereals to replenish our energies. For eg dal-rice, poha, khichdi, upma, etc which are easy to digest and provide required energy are good options

3) taking probiotics such as curd can help the gut to stay healthy and to curb the side effects of medicines

4) proteins are very important which can be taken in the form of dals, eats, chicken soups. Proteins helps us to repair the tissues damaged during fevers

5) avoid fried foods, spicy and fatty food. They are difficult to digest and can cause extra burden on your stomach

6) fruits:- most fruits contain 80 percent water, so they are very good for rehydration. Food rich in vitamin c are good for immunity and also to repair cells lemons, oranges, indian gooseberries are good source of vitamin c

7) vegetables:- vegetables supply a surplus amount of essential vitamins and minerals required to support our immune system as help to rid of fever. Vegetables likes carrot, onions, are recommended. However avoid eating raw vegetables during fever as they may cause gas or bloating.

8) herbs and spices:- there are many herbs and spices which work as immune-boosters. Garlic, ginger, laung, cardamom, cinnamon to name a few.

So next time whenever you have fever, visit your doctor for medicines and follow these diet tips to bounce back to recovery!

Stay Home - Stay Safe!
Pandemic is a disease epidemic that has spread across multiple continents or worldwide. Some known pandemic diseases in human history are plague, dengue fever, cholera, meningitis, chikungunia, ebola, poliomyelitis, hepatitis b, zika virus & the most recent 2019 coronavirus. The coronavirus disease (covid-19) was confirmed as a pandemic by the world health organization (WHO) on 11 march 2020. By that time 118, 000 positive cases were diagnosed over 110 countries. Coronavirus disease is an infectious disease. Common symptoms are fever, cough & shortness of breath. Other symptoms include muscle pain, sputum production, diarrhea, sore throat, abdominal pain and loss of smell or taste. This disease does not show any symptom in the patient for initial 5-6 days, but it actively spreads to others through respiratory droplets & touch of an infected person. The most effective prevention techniques are periodic hand washing (minimum of 20 sec each time), cough hygiene, quarantine & physical and social distancing.
Physical and social distancing means not to get near any person (preferably maintain 1-2 meter distance from each other), not to travel to another city, state or country, avoid all social gatherings, avoid visiting religious places/ malls/ theaters/ tourist spots so that contact with an infected person (also during disease s incubation period) may be avoided. To limit the spread of coronavirus disease, governments of many countries have declared a countrywide lockdown (e.g India, China, France, Italy, New Zealand, Poland, UK, USA, etc.)

During a lockdown, all schools, colleges, universities, hotels/ bars/ restaurants, many factories, call centers and many such industries remain closed. Also, social events like weddings, funerals, live concerts, and gatherings are stopped. Also, all the public transport modes are closed which forces people to stay at their home, either work from home or no work at all. These have worse effects on the economy and also on a person s health.

Health contains both mental and physical components. WHO Warns about the effects of lockdown on mental health. Isolation, physical distancing, closure of schools and workplaces can naturally cause stress, anxiety, fear & loneliness at this time. According to a psychologist, there is a major risk of depression among these communities. Children are likely to experience worry, anxiety & fear because they no longer have the sense of structure stimulation that is provided by schools plays.

To avoid mental conditions-

Have a routine as much as you can. It means eating, drink, work, sleep, exercise and enjoy on time.
Consume a balanced diet. Stay well hydrated.
Reduce alcohol intake.
Routine exercises at home (a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise each day)

Declutter your house.
Remember, cleanliness is godliness!
Meditate
Maintain community and social connections, of course from a distance.
Continue serving the community.
Studies have shown even small acts of kindness have strong & immediate mental health benefits.

Some tips and tricks:

Eat and sleep on time.
Fitterfox an app for mini exercises at home.
Exercise videos aerobics, zumba, etc.
Dance on music.
Play games that involve physical activities.

Viral Fever - How To Avert It?

MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, DNB, CCEBDM(DIABETOLOGY)
General Physician, Lucknow
Viral Fever - How To Avert It?
Viral infections usually lead to viral fever, which is characterised by high body temperatures and body ache.

Causes

The main cause of viral fever is infection. It is contagious, and it spreads from one person to another by coming in contact directly with an infected person s body fluids. Viruses are spread when an infected person sneezes, coughs, yawns or talks. Tiny particles of viruses are sprayed into the air, and if a healthy person is close enough, he/she can get infected and may start showing symptoms of fever anywhere between 16 to 48 hours.

Symptoms

Symptoms of viral fever and other critical conditions can often be similar, which makes it hard to diagnose it. Thus it is important to know the exact symptoms of viral fever.

In case, you or any other member of your family, are incapacitated with high fever, look out for the following symptoms

1. Fever can be intermittent, that is, it comes and goes in intervals
2. Fever is usually accompanied with chills (feeling of coldness induced by high fever)
3. Medicines do not work effectively
4. Fever persists longer than normal
5. Severe joint pains
6. Swollen face
7. Rash

Viral fever usually subside on their own, and can last for more than a week. But you should remember that antibiotics do not treat viral fever. Antibiotics are meant to kill bacteria, not viruses. So taking antibiotics during viral fever is not advised since it would not cure your symptoms, only give you an unpleasant case of acidity. Instead, you can take decongestants and over-the-counter anti-fever medications. If you lose a lot of body fluids (due to vomiting or diarrhoea), you need to consume fluids that will restore lost electrolytes, such as sport drinks or Gatorade. You can also try the following home remedies:

1. Coriander tea
2. Fenugreek water
3. Dill seeds porridge
4. Dry ginger concoction
5. Rice starch
6. Tulsi leaves

Viral fever can be prevented, and you don t need to adopt any extreme measures. You can do simple things such as

1. Regularly wash your hands
2. Abstain from going to crowded places
3. Don t touch your nose and mouth without washing your hands
4. If you do have a cold, cover your nose or mouth with a clean hanky while sneezing, coughing or yawning

Fever - Know When To Be Alert!

MBBS
General Physician, Shimla
Fever - Know When To Be Alert!
Fever is not a disease! It's a known fact that the normal human body temperature is 98.6 F (37 C). If the temperature goes beyond that, then it's called fever. But one must not worry every time if there is a rise in the temperature.

Why?
The reason is that the immune system is designed to raise temperature as a defence mechanism if there is an attack by a foreign body (such as bacteria). So body temperature may fluctuate between 97 and 100.4. But there is no need to worry.

When to Consider Checking?
A routine checkup is unnecessary. You may consider checking when:

You feel the warmth while you touch
You feel very tired, dizzy and lose appetite
You feel nauseated, see rashes on the body, experience loose motion, sore throat, muscle pain, headache, etc.
Is it Time to Worry?
Normally, fever is not dangerous. However, if you see the following conditions, then it's time to worry and call a doctor.

If the body temperature is more than 103 F
If fever lasts for more than five days
If you feel difficulty in breathing
If there is severe vomiting or diarrhea
If you feel stiffness in the neck and have headache
If you feel excessively sleepy and lethargic
If you see redness in skin, rashes or blood in the stool.
If the condition worsens, it is time to rush to a hospital. There could be following:

Meningitis: it's life-threatening and highly transmissible in case of bacterial infection. A combination of a fever, extreme headache and stiffness in the neck is an indication that you must rush to the emergency department of a hospital near you.
Difficulty in breathing or chest pain along with fever should prompt you to call for emergency medical assistance.
If someone has fever along with blood in stool, urine or mucus, it's one of the reasons to seek for emergency medical help.
If one has fever and is quite disturbed or puzzled unnecessarily, then the person should be taken to the emergency department.
A person with low immune responses (such as one who is suffering from cancer or AIDS) needs doctor's help in case of fever development.
Hyperthermia: it's a condition of very high fever, i.e., more than 104 F. The person seems to be confused and may not respond to verbal stimuli or commands. It's time for a medical emergency.
What Should You Do?
For mild fever, even home remedy can help. Aspirin shouldn't be the first choice and an absolute no for individuals less than 18 years. Other drugs that people usually tend to consume are ibuprofen or acetaminophen. One should also drink plenty of water. In case of a heat stroke, body needs to be cooled.
Other severe causes such as viral infection should lead you to a doctor.

Infections - Know Forms & Homeopathic Remedies For Them!

BHMS, MD - Homeopathy
Homeopathy Doctor, Mumbai
Infections - Know Forms & Homeopathic Remedies For Them!
Infection is generally understood as the invasion into the body tissues of an organism by certain foreign bodies such as bacteria, parasite, and virus. They are transmissible diseases and can be transmitted from one person to the other via sneezing, coughing or physical contact. They can be mild, moderate or severe.

* They can be acute, that is, can last for a short time, or chronic that lasts for a long time, or a latent infection that may not cause any symptoms at first but reactivates and resurfaces over a period of time.
* Although each infection has its own distinct symptom. Generally, these symptoms include fever, swelling, redness, inflammation, burning, cough, diarrhea, fatigue, muscular pain, nausea, vomiting, rapid pulse or rapid breathing.
* If the patient has a severe headache, difficulty in breathing, painful swelling, and unexplained prolonged fever or a cough, he or she should immediately consult a doctor.

Conventional drugs that are given to treat infections like antibiotics, antivirals, antihistamines and steroids have many side effects on the human body. They, on one hand, hamper the digestive power of the system, and on the other hand, lower the immunity power of the body. In the long run, these medicines can have adverse effects on the body. Though conventional drugs suppress the disease for some time, the disease tends to resurface in future.

However, Homeopathy has been found to be a great success in treating both acute and chronic infections. The best part is there is no side effect.

Homeopathy also boosts our immune system so that the body naturally develops the strength to fight against infections in future, when foreign bodies invade. Homeopathic medicines have also proved to be effective as preventive measures against infections.

Some of the Homeopathic medicines for the treatment of most common infections are discussed below:

1. Throat infections - Belladonna, Lachesis, Lycopodium, Phytolacca, and Mercurius are most commonly administered to cure throat infections.
2. Skin infection - Common homeopathic remedies are Sulphur, Calendula, Hypericum, Silica, and Hepar sulfuris.
3. Bladder infection - Berberis, Chimaphila, Hydrastis, Apis, Cantharis, and sarsaparilla are commonly prescribed.
4. Stomach infection - Arsenic album, Nux vomica, Carbo veg, Lycopodium, and Pulsatilla are commonly recommended.
5. Sinus infection - Kali bichromicum, Pulsatilla, Mercurius, Natrum muriaticum, and Allium cepa work well in cases of sinus infections.

Most of the Homeopathy medicines are prescribed on the basis of symptoms observed. So, Homeopathic medicines are prescribed even before the definitive diagnosis is made. Thus, the time saved prevents the infection from spreading, and the patient is automatically cured rapidly.
