Fungal culture testing is done on a sample of the drain fluid to measure the level of fungal growth in the drain fluid. This is done to confirm the post operative fungal infection during the treatment and also after the treatment of immunosuppressive condition and post-operative fungal infection. A fungal culture is a type of laboratory test. It recognizes the organisms that can cause infection in your joint fluid. The actual culture test happens in a laboratory. The combined fluid is also used to test the presence of proteins, glucose or crystals in the fluid. For example, the presence of monosodium urate monohydrate crystal indicates that you may be suffering from gout. Fungal Culture can also determine the number of WBC’s and RBC’s present in fluid.
There is no special preparation for fungal culture drain fluid. Inform your doctor if you are on any medication or there are any underlying medical conditions or allergens, or if you are pregnant, before passing through fungal culture drain fluid. You may have to be fast before the process. Depending on your situation your doctor will give specific instructions.
After collecting the sample, it will be sent to laboratory for testing to know about: blood cells and glucose, protein, crystalsm, organisms, such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses
The authorized doctor will get a sample of the joint fluid by performing a joint aspiration. The procedure of joint aspiration includes the removal of joint fluid, for which the patient needs to remove their clothing while replacing it with a hospital gown. As the whole procedure is performed under sterile conditions, the place needs to be cleaned before proceeding further. The doctor will perform the joint aspiration using a local anesthetic near the site of the needle insertion. It is basically carried out at knee, but sometimes it can also be performed on hips, ankles, shoulders, wrists or elbows. You may feel a slight needle stick or a stinging sensation. Doctor will draw a small sample of fluid into the syringe. After this he will remove the needle and apply a bandage over it.
