The Fungal smear Koh test sputum is performed to measure the level of fungal smear in the sputum. The test is also performed to detect the fungal infection in the lung and for immunosuppressive condition. The sample of sputum taken from the lower air passages is used for the test.
You do not need to prepare specifically for the test. You have to make sure that you have gathered all the information from your doctor and are well aware of the process and the medications. Apart from this, your doctor would also like to know the medicines or supplements you take as certain medications can affect the test. Depending on your situation and condition, your doctor will advise you with the best course of treatment.
The sputum sample is sent to the lab for analysis. The stained slide fluoresce is tested and if the result is positive, it shows the presence of fungal infection. A normal result shows no presence of fungi and the symptoms are caused by factors other than fungi.
For the test, your doctor or lab technician will take a sample of sputum. The sputum is not the saliva that is produced by the glands in the mouth. It is the viscous material that your doctor will take from the lower air passages such as the lungs and the bronchi. The sample may contain blood, pus, mucus or bacteria.
