Hydroxybutyrate Dehydrogenase (HBD) is an enzyme found mostly in the heart muscle. It is clinically important as it signifies the heart muscle damage in a patient post a heart attack. HBD test helps determine the level of hydrobutic dehydrogenase in the blood. The HBD levels rise in the blood till 8 to 10 hours following a heart attack and increases in 2-4 days. The levels may remain elevated till 18 days, which is a long time compared to other indicators for heart attack. The signs which indicate that an HBD test is required include intense chest and back pain, dizziness, fatigue, and lightheadedness. Hydroxybutyrate Dehydrogenase is also found in the brain and kidney. HBD is one of the factors tested for muscle damage. Since Hydroxybutyrate Dehydrogenase test is an inexpensive test compared to another test, usually doctors prescribe it to majority patients.
No special preparation is required prior to this test. You should inform about all the medicines that you take, in case any of them can alter the test results, the doctor might suggest changes. You are advised to wear a sleeveless shirt or a full sleeve shirt which can be folded easily during the test.
The normal value of Hydroxybutyrate Dehydrogenase in the muscle is 290 Unit/L. Higher value than indicated value in the blood test may indicate
Heart attack (myocardial infarction)
Liver disease
Nephrotic syndrome
Leukemia
Lymphoma
Anemia
The results of this test are not to be considered alone for any kind of interpretation. The doctor may order further tests to understand the condition perfectly.
