IHC - Neuron Specific Enolase Test

IHC - Neuron Specific Enolase Test

Neuron Specific Enolase (NSE) test is conducted to detect small cell lung carcinoma, neuroendocrine tumors, cough, breathing problems, weakness and rapid weight loss. This test also determines the level of neuro-specific enolase in the blood serum only. This test is generally performed as a follow-up marker for the patients who are having tumors that secrete NSE. Neuro specific enolase test is conducted using a blood sample. If the patient is undergoing treatment then slowly NSE levels should be decreased, but in case if they are increasing rapidly then it is considered as tumor still exists and is spreading slowly.

Neuron Specific Enolase test does not require any special preparation, before taking it. It is utmost important to inform your doctor about the medications or health supplements that you use regularly because these medications and supplements may produce false results by interfering with the test. So that, doctors will advice you beforehand whether to continue or stop them. As this is a blood test, most of them will be fasting before undergoing this test, but there is no need for the patients to fast before taking up test. There are no special restrictions to be followed even in the diet before going for the test unless advised by the doctor.

Neuron Specific Enolase test is conducted to determine NSE level in blood serum. These tests conclude the following results: If NSE value is higher than 8.9 micrograms per liter as per the results of the test then it is essential for the diagnosis of Small cell carcinoma of the lung, Carcinoid, Neuroblastoma, Pheochromocytoma, Retinoblastoma and Pancreatic cell carcinoma. Only based on this test, it cannot be concluded, but along with these clinical findings and additional supplemental tests are performed. In some cases, false results may occur due to the interpretation of some medicines or other conditions.

Neuron Specific Enolase test is performed by considering blood sample from the patient and testing it in the laboratory. Firstly, area on the arm from where blood is collected is cleaned thoroughly with cotton. Then they tie band, above the place and search for the vein. Then they insert the needle and collect few milliliters of blood from the vein by pulling the plunger slowly. Now the band is removed from the arm and collected blood is transferred into the tube. It is then sent to the laboratory for results, generally, it takes 2 to 3 days of time for results.
