Methamphetamine, commonly known as Crystal Meth, is an abusive drug used for recreation. It acts as a stimulant to the Central Nervous System, causing light headedness and hallucinations. Methamphetamine can cause quick addiction, and leads to loss of teeth, hyperactivity and periodic fainting. Drug tests are used to monitor a person's use of abusive drugs. The test is usually done by assessing drugs in urine sample, sweat sample, saliva and even hair. The test is usually ordered by most employers before hiring an individual. It is also routinely performed for individuals in sports. Apart from this, the test may be ordered for an individual displaying addiction- like symptoms.
The patient must let the doctor know of any over the counter drugs he is consuming. Any prescribed drugs should also be highlighted. The urine sample for drug testing is usually a random urine sample, meaning it can be taken at any time throughout the day. If the doctor specifies a 24 hour urine sample, the patient must provide the urine sample beginning of the day.
If the presence of drugs is detected in the assay, the patient will be ordered another test. The second test will subject the urine sample to Mass Spectrometry, to identify a specific drug. It should be noted that it is common to receive false positives and false negatives in the results of these tests. To confirm drug abuse, routine tests coupled with other diagnoses are necessary.
The sample can be taken at home or at the clinic. In both cases, care should be taken to prevent leakage of the sample. A special cup will be provided to the patient. The patient must clean the genital area well. The patient will be required to urinate in the given cup, providing approximately 45ml sample. The patient must secure the lid of the cup. The cup must be submitted for testing.
