MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a type of medical imaging procedure using strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of various parts inside the body. Empty Sella syndrome is where the pituitary gland shrinks or becomes flattened, filling the sphenoid bone of the human skull with cerebrospinal fluid instead of the normal pituitary. This can be detected using MRI Scans Following are the Symptoms A minority of people may experience headaches or disturbed vision. Deficiency in the production of one or more pituitary hormones (hypopituitarism) is present in less than 10% of people with primary empty sella syndrome
There is no special or specific preparation before taking a MRI. The Doctor should be informed if you are taking any medications or supplements and incase of any recent surgeries or allergies. There is no food restriction before taking the procedure. MRI scans use strong magnets and hence any metal or electronic objects should be removed before going for the scan procedure. If required, you will be given a mild sedative to help you relax during the procedure. Results will be provided after few days of the procedure.
MRI avoids the need for exposure to harmful ionizing radiation. It is a safe and Painful test to produce detailed pictures of the brain. The image and resolution produced by MRI is quite detailed and can detect tiny changes of structures within the body
The hospital would require you to switch to a hospital gown. The MRI scanner is a cylindrical machine. You will be asked to lie on a special bed which will be moved slowly moved inside the MRI scanner. A frame will be kept over your head as we need to scan the brain. The frame sends and receives signals which will help in producing better quality images during the MRI scan. The movement of the body will affect the imaging and hence you will be requested to stay still. You will be shifted to the control room to start the procedure and will be able to communicate with the doctor throughout the entire procedure. You will be hearing loud banging sound due to the electric current in the scanning coil. Typical Scan will take about 15 to 90 minutes to complete. Once completed, you can slide out of the scanner and leave the room. A radiologist will study the images and interpret the results of your MRI scan.
