MRI Scan - Sternum Test

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) Sternum means MRI scan of the chest. This test uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to produce detailed pictures of the structures within the chest. MRI Sternum scan test provides information on cancer and indicates its size, extent and degree of its spread to adjacent structures. Not only this, this action also details out the anatomy and function of the heart and its blood flow.

It's important to tell your doctor about any health problems, recent surgeries or allergies. For women it's advised to inform your doctor if you are pregnant before taking this test. Although, the magnetic field is not harmful, but it may cause some medical devices to malfunction. One can continue with their medication unless doctor advised not to before appearing for this test. For your convenience it’s advisable to leave jewelry of any kind at home and wear loose, comfortable clothing.

MRI scan of the chest is performed to: determine abnormal masses, including cancer of the lungs or other tissues determine tumor size, extent, and the degree of spread to adjacent structures. to assess the anatomy and function of the heart and its component structures (valves, etc.). determine blood flow dynamics in the vessels and heart chambers. display lymph nodes and blood vessels, including vascular and lymphatic malformations of the chest. to assess disorders of the chest bones (vertebrae, ribs and sternum) and chest wall soft tissue (muscles and fat) etc.

You may be asked to position yourself on the moveable examination table. Straps and bolsters may be used to help you stay still and maintain the correct position during imaging.

Devices that contain coils capable of sending and receiving radio waves may be placed around or adjacent to the area of the body being studied. Later on, you may be asked to wait until the technologist or radiologist checks the images in case additional images are needed. MRI exams generally include multiple runs (sequences), some of which may last several minutes.
