Mum1 Protein Test

Mum1 Protein Test

MUM1 belongs to Protein coding gene. It is expressed as Multiple myeloma oncogene-1 meaning MUM-1. MUM 1 is known as Melanoma Associated Antigen (Mutated) 1. Many people get affected with MUM1 such as Melanoma. MUM1 gene encoding shows that it is one of the causes of chromosomal abnormalities and DNA damages. The MUM 1 protein test is conducted using tissue microarrays and immunohistochemistry. The method used is called Immunohistochemical Stain (IHC) MUM 1 protein is, therefore, a 50 kDa protein that is encoded by Mum1 gene. The expression of MUM 1 is derived from the antigen-stimulated B cells that can differentiate towards plasma cells.

The test doesn't call for any specific preparation. However, a patient is expected to do as directed by the doctors. He may be asked to refrain from current medicines or have no water or food before the test. The guidelines are given by the clinic based on the condition of the patient.

Identify if there are symptoms of malignancy. It helps for further investigation in hematolymphoid neoplasm The test enables the doctors to identify melanomas and start treatment accordingly.

The method followed for the test is known as ImmunoHistoChemistry (IHC). It is a kind of staining process. It aims at selecting MUM 1 protein in cells of a tissue section by applying the principle of antibodies that bind to antigens in biological tissues. The antigen-antibody reaction can be recognised under the light microscopic level. The methods are used to detect the specific protein in the sample.

It takes formalin fixed paraffin-embedded tissue block to do the testing. Specimen Requirements: Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue block; 1 H&E slide plus three unstained charged slides; fine needle aspirate in RPMI; bone marrow core fixed in formalin; bone marrow clot fixed in formalin.
