Mumps, PCR, Qualitative Test

Mumps is caused by RNA Virus called Paramyxoviridae. Mumps outbreak happened in UK, USA, and Canada. A person who was partially vaccinated got affected by this disease. This test is essential when the following symptoms show up on an individual like, Mild to high fever, swelling of the parotid gland in children or chewing causing pain in adults, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, a cough and cold in children. PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction)identifies this disease by Reverse Transcriptase (RT enzyme) infusion method in which RNA helps to replicate the allergy-causing virus to make it visible.

No fasting is required for this test. Sample collected from the Buccal swab is used for this test. Urine is also collected. Both require sterile containers. The patient must not stay close to any person or even technician. The patient must be hydrated often before collecting the specimen. The technician who collects and test the sample must be cautious as this disease is spreadable. Face mask, gloves are essential while collecting the sample. The specimens once collected in sterile containers are suppose to be stored in a refrigerator.

PCR- Qualitative method can be time-consuming, however, the now-a-days test tube method gives the result within hours. This method does not require blood sample hence easy to conduct on children and toddlers. This method is much effective to know the mumps in early stage itself. It helps to prevent spreading and early treatment also made possible. This test followed by PCR-Quantitative test gives the intensity of the virus attack which helps doctor to prescribe accordingly Early stage detection helps toddlers from an adverse condition.

This test requires Buccal Swab and Urine. Give a sterile container to the patient and show them the restroom. Once they fill up, send the sample to the lab. The patient must be comfortably seated. To collect the Buccal swab ( which is collected inside the mouth in swollen part of the cheek) Saliva is the best sample for this test which can hold DNA Structure temporarily. Brush type of device is inserted in the affected part of cheek area and wiped enough to collect some saliva and close it with the cap provided for the device. Store it in the refrigerator.
