Myeloperoxidase(MPO) Test

Myeloperoxidase(MPO) Test

MPO is a special type of protein found in the body that cause chemical changes. MPO is typically stored in a certain type of WBCs. These cells release MPO when blood vessels are damaged or become inflamed.

MPO increases the risk of heart-attack in several ways:
1.MPO changes low-density lipoprotein (bad cholesterol) into an even more harmful form that gets collected as plaque in our arteries.
2.MPO production leads to the damage of our artery wall.
3.MPO hinders the protective effects of high-density lipoprotein (good cholesterol).

Measuring the level of MPO in your body can help in identifying inflammation in our arteries. If inflammation is found, it means you are more likely to get an heart attack. MPO level is checked with a simple blood test. There are not any special instructions for this test. It can be done whenever the person wants. You do not need to fast or stop taking your medicines. But, in case you are having any other kind of blood tests, you may have to follow some special instructions apart from the MPO test.

Ideal values for MPO test should be less than 400 pmol/L. However:
1.400 - 480 pmol/L(lower risks)
2. ≥480 pmol/L(higher risks)

If your MPO level is high, some more tests will be recommended. One should get advice from the doctor on how to lower their MPO level and reduce their overall cardiovascular risk. To help reduce the risks following may recommended:
1. Eat a heart-healthy diet which are low in fat and include lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
2. Maintain a healthy weight ratio.
3. Controlling your blood pressure can play a vital role.
4. Smoking should be quit immediately.
5. Include some physical exercises in your daily routine.
6. Work with your doctor to lower your LDL cholesterol levels.

During this test, a lab technician will draw blood from a vein, generally from the inside of your elbow or from the back of your hand.
The lab assistant will:
1.clean your skin with an antiseptic wipe.
2.place an elastic band around your upper arm to help the vein.
3.swell with blood.
4.insert a needle in the your and collects the required amount of blood.
5.cover the area with a bandage to stop any bleeding.
6.label your sample and send it to a lab for analysis.
