Sodium Urine test is done to measure the levels of Sodium in urine. It is a 24 hour test. Sodium is both a mineral and an electrolyte. It helps in maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance in body. The results of this test effected by the intake of water and salt. A 24 hour urine test means the measure of amount of urine produced in a complete day. It is generally prescribed by the physician after an abnormal report of blood sodium levels. This test can also be done on spot, in which the amount of sodium present in the urine is measured. This test can help doctors determine the reason for abnormal value of sodium also whether the kidneys are functioning properly.
Before the test the doctors might suggest you to stop certain medication that may affect the result of the test. This test is usually performed in case there are signs of Kidney failure, and may also be done in case of poly-urea. This test is will give abnormal results due to some of the following reasons: Diabetes Insipidus, Diabetes Mellitus, Excessive Fluid intake, Renal diseases, Use of diuretics.
For a 24 hour sodium urine test you have to collect your urine in a special container. Day 1 of the test you have to urinate in the toilet the first thing in morning. Afterwards collect the urine each time in the special container that is provided by the pathology. On day 2, first thing in morning collect the urine in the same container. Close the container and keep it in a cool place. Name and date the label and return it for analysis.
