Tips For Reducing Recovery Time After Hemorrhoid Surgery!

Have you ever faced difficulty or experienced severe pain while defecation? Well, this is a widespread phenomenon amongst many, but most of them feel shy to discuss this problem. Different People differently understand the term Piles. For some, it is the name given to the uneasiness or pain that one feels during defecation and for others, it might be blood found along with feces. This notion is partially correct. Piles, also known as Hemorrhoids, are vascular structures that are present in the anal canal.

These vascular structures are like cushions that help with stool control. The problem arises when these structures become swollen. Post inflammation of hemorrhoids leads to the ultimate problem. Piles become painful which is unbearable for many while a few people don’t feel much pain but bleeding characterizes the disease. Around 10% of patients having Piles problem require surgical treatment, but they are unaware of the measures needed before opting for a hemorrhoid surgery.

Hemorrhoidectomy

The operation that is used to remove hemorrhoids is known as Hemorrhoidectomy. In this surgery, a local or general anesthesia is given to the patient so that the affected area gets numb and the patient doesn’t feel much pain. The doctors make perform a procedure around the anus to get rid of the hemorrhoids. As the anus area is susceptible, stitches might be required. Patients can go home the same day, but intensive care is needed. It might take around two weeks to get normal, in some cases, it may also extend to 6 weeks.

Cure Piles in 15 Minutes (BIEM)-

‘Biological Impendence Electrical auto-Measurement’ (BIEM) concept is a smart and advanced technology that able to produce controlled ‘tissues fusion’ without causing any carbonation. This technology is being aggressively develop and incorporated into the variety of modern surgery.

The major advantages of this technology is no bleeding, no open wound, no risk of infection and less pain as the nerve fibers is sealed in the tissues fusion. The new tissues growth will take place from inside and the dry and hard zone will take off itself when tissues healed up.

Measures to be taken post hemorrhoid surgery

The surgery is extremely safe, however, like all surgeries, there are certain precautions that need to be taken in order to avoid post-op infection or reaction to anesthesia. People mostly complain about the severe pain that they feel while defecating and might also be accompanied by irritation or itchiness in the treated area. These symptoms are normal, but if the irritation or itchiness becomes severe or excessive bleeding becomes frequent, then consult your doctor immediately.

Fever or difficulty while defecating should also be reported to the doctor if it continues to be a problem after surgery. For the recovery phase, your doctor might prescribe the use of some pain killers along with the usage of some stool softeners. Taking a warm bath might also lower down the pain.

Usually, the doctors prescribe a healthy diet before and after hemorrhoidectomy surgery. But the measures might differ from case to case. A few common after and before care measures include diet changes, lifestyle changes, and adopting a regular exercise program. These three steps will not only help in speedy recovery but also reduce the chances of hemorrhoids recurring.

Eating Coconut, a Superb Way to Reduce Hunger and Burn Fat

The word weight loss brings an image of starving, eating just enough to survive, and reduce weight. However, that is not the case always. There are some foods that can actually help burn fat, the more you eat of these on a regular basis, the lesser the chances of you growing fat. The good old coconut, which has formed a regular part of our diet for ages is one such wonderful item. Listed below are some benefits that show how coconut helps in weight loss.

  1. Good Fiber: Foods usually contain two types of fibers soluble and insoluble. The soluble usually contains sugar and starch. These are digested to provide calories. The non-soluble on the other hand is not digested and only provides roughage. Coconut contains an astounding 61% of non-soluble fiber, which is completely devoid of calories and therefore, no contribution whatsoever to weight loss.
  2. Instant Energy Source: For athletes and sports people, coconut provides an instant source of energy with lesser number of calories. This energy can help them curb hunger for prolonged period of time. People who eat coconut regularly can go without food for longer hours without experiencing symptoms of low blood sugar.
  3. Lowered Glycemic Index: The glycemic index is an indication of how fast sugar is released into the bloodstream, leading to higher sugar level. Sugar has a glycemic index of about 80 and coconut is about 35. Therefore, it reduces the pace at which sugar is released into the body and does not promote formation of fat. Coconut is also easy on the pancreas, not pushing it to pump insulin into the system.
  4. Reduced appetite: By improving insulin secretion and promoting blood glucose usage, the cravings to have something sweet to boost energy is reduced. The super nutritious coconut is digested to right away produce energy and consume it, thereby improving endurance.
  5. Good fat source: The coconut is a rich source of medium chain fatty acids which are good for health. Unlike the long chain fatty acids, which contribute to weight gain, the medium ones are good for heart and do not add to weight in a big way.
  6. Easy on the stomach: Coconut also improves digestion in general and improves absorption of nutrients (vitamins, minerals, and amino acids) from other food substances, thereby improving overall nutrition. The good fiber, good fat and good sugar all add to the immense benefits of coconut. Not just whole coconut, even coconut oil and coconut milk are being used more now.

Not just weight loss, coconut is also very healthy for the heart, skin, and hair. It has no trans-fat, no gluten, is nontoxic and hypoallergenic and boosts immunity. Eat coconut in any form and enjoy the various benefits.

5 Winning Way to Reduce Muscle Tightness and Pain.
5 winning way to reduce muscle tightness and pain.

Drinking plenty of water, often considered to be between eight to ten glasses per day, provides many benefits such as preventing and relieving tight and cramped muscles related to dehydration. However, tight muscles can have a variety of causes and might require dietary and lifestyle changes to adequately deal with.
Minerals, electrolytes and water are all needed for normal muscle tone and function. Calcium is especially important for contraction, magnesium is needed for relaxation, and water for firmness and electrolyte exchange.

Athletes commonly have tight muscles and also people who are under stress. Tight muscles lose their flexibility and might become painful to the touch. Mineral deficiency, especially magnesium, can lead to muscle tightness, twitching and maybe even restless leg syndrome at night. A lack of electrolytes, such as sodium, interferes with nerve conductance to muscle fibers and results in tightness and spasms. Poor blood circulation hampers the minerals, electrolytes and water getting to muscles, which can cause symptoms.

Most of us drink a lot of beverages but it has either caffeine or alcohol which can both lead to mild dehydration.

5 winning ways to reduce muscle tightness and pain.

1. Drink plenty of water (recommended about 8 glasses a day)

2. Reduce caffeine and alcohol intake. (cut down tea, coffee, aerated drinks, alcohol). Alcohol and caffeine cause mild dehydration which can lead to muscle tightness.

3. Foods that reduce muscle tightness and cramps
Foods rich in magnesium such as bananas can help. Use sea salt with food as the sodium in it helps relax muscle cramps. Potassium rich foods such as avocados, potatoes, bananas, broccoli, orange juice, soybeans, apricots, and raisins can decrease tightness and cramps. Milk has a large amount of vitamin d, which will reduce your chances of cramping. Have one to two glasses of milk each day to help you prevent cramps. As a bonus, all the calcium in whole milk will also contribute to healthy bone growth.

4. Stretching exercises.
Stretching exercises will help release chemical substances called endorphins that help reduce pain. Also it helps elongate tight and contracted muscle fibers.
These are links to some simple stretches but check with your doctor if it is appropriate for you to do the same.

5. Massage to relieve pain from tight muscles.
Deep tissue massage, trigger point release and myofascial release are some of the techniques used by physiotherapists trained in manual therapy to help loosen painful knots in muscles and relax the same.

If pain and tightness persists consult a health practitioner for evaluation and treatment.

Colorectal Surgery - Is There A Need To Take A Laxative Or Stool Softener After It?

Colorectal Surgery - Is There A Need To Take A Laxative Or Stool Softener After It?

Colorectal surgery deals with the disorders of the rectum, anus and colon. Another name of colon is ‘large intestine’. These three body parts form the last stages of the digestive process. When the human waste passes through the colon, its salt and water are extracted before it exits the body as human excreta.

Colorectal disorders

  1. Swelling and inflammation of the veins in the anus (also called as Haemorrhoids)
  2. Anal fissures- unnatural cracks and fissures in the anal area
  3. Fistulas or the unnatural connections between the anus and other anorectal areas
  4. Conditions of constipation
  5. Incontinence in passing of faeces
  6. When the walls of the rectum protrude through the anus- also called as Rectal prolapse
  7. Birth defects such as imperforate anus
  8. Anal cancer- this condition is rare
  9. Colorectal cancer- cancer of colon and rectum
  10. Any injuries to the anus
  11. Removal of any objects inserted into the anus

Bowel habits after colorectal surgery

Many patients report cases of diarrhoea, leakage of stool or gas, urgency to use the toilet and a feeling of insufficient evacuation of faeces. Relax; these conditions are not going to last forever. Your rectum and anus are adjusting to new conditions after this surgery. These organs may take six to twelve months to adjust to new bowel habits.

Is there a need to take a laxative or stool softener?

There is no need to take laxatives after a colorectal surgery. Drink lots of water to make your stool softer and easy to pass. If there is a water deficiency in your body, then it may lead to your faeces becoming hard. In that case, take milk of magnesium, colace etc.

Activities post surgery

You can continue with your normal schedule after this surgical procedure. Carry on running, jogging, exercising, climbing up the stairs etc. even after your surgery. Gastroenterologists recommend that patients should desist from lifting loads weighing more than 10 pounds so that there are no post surgery complications.

Diet after colorectal surgery

Avoid spicy and heavy to digest meals after your surgery. Once the intestines begin working normally, you can continue having your spicy food. Chew your food well to aid its digestion.

Returning to work after colorectal surgery

Most people are back to their work after taking a break of 2-5 days. If the surgery is pretty detailed, you may have to take a break of up to a month. Patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery may have to take a rest of 2- 4 weeks before they report back to work. Take it easy before slipping into your regular schedule. If working hurts after your surgery, don’t do it.

How to reduce Acidity
What kind of diet changes can help acid reflux?

One thing you can do to reduce your risk for heartburn and acid reflux disease is to eat low-fat, high-protein meals. Also, eat smaller meals more frequently; stop eating before you get too full.

Pay attention to foods that seem to trigger your heartburn and avoid them as much as possible.

Beverages that commonly trigger heartburn or make it worse, include:

Coffee or tea (both regular and decaffeinated)
Other beverages that contain caffeine
Carbonated beverages
Alcohol

Foods that commonly trigger heartburn or make it worse, include:
Citrus fruits, such as oranges and lemons
Tomatoes and products that contain tomatoes, such as tomato sauce and salsa
Chocolate
Mint or peppermint
Fatty or spicy foods, such as chili or curry
Onions and garlic

What other lifestyle changes can treat acid reflux?
In addition to acid reflux diet changes, see which of the following lifestyle changes you can make.

Quit smoking. Smoking increases your risk for heartburn and acid reflux disease in several ways. It may increase the amount of acid secreted by your stomach and interfere with the function of muscles that help keep acid down.

Reduce reflux while sleeping. These steps will help reduce reflux when you sleep:
Put blocks under the head of your bed to raise it at least 4 to 6 inches. This helps keep your stomach's contents down. However, it doesn't work to simply use lots of extra pillows because this position may increase pressure on your abdomen.
Stop eating at least two or three hours before lying down.
Try sleeping in a chair for daytime naps.
Lessen the pressure. Often, extra pressure around your abdomen increases acid reflux. Try these steps:
Don't wear tight clothes or tight belts.
If you're overweight or obese, take steps to lose weight with exercise and diet changes.

•Eat slowly and chew your food properly. This will help you feel full, and the very act of chewing will leave you feeling more satisfied.

•Instead of 2 large meals, have smaller and more frequent meals. Keep track of the portion size.
•Eat a healthy snack every 3 hours to keep your blood sugar levels stable.

How Substance Use Is Studied And Treated?

Psychologists and other researchers study the antecedents of substance use and how what we know about the human brain and its development can inform our understanding of why people use substances and how their use becomes problematic.
They often study specific types of alcohol and drug problems, their origins and effects, how these problems change over time, how they are distinct from or may overlap with other conditions and how they may interact with biological, social, behavioral and other cultural issues.

Prevention & treatment -
Psychologists and other professionals apply the findings of research to treat substance use in individual people, couples and whole families and may sometimes provide treatments to people brought together as a group or in a community.
They also may integrate more biological approaches, such as the use of medications, with social and behavioral treatments, work to motivate people to engage in the process of change, maintain long-term changes and even prevent the development of alcohol and drug problems in the first place.

Behavioral therapies for opioid use disorder -
That's a missed opportunity, experts argue, since evidence-based behavioral treatments used in concert with medication have the potential to make a real difference in long-term recovery" substance use is not just about biology. When someone comes into treatment for opioid use disorder, there's a lot of history that predates that, and a lot of things that happened when they were engaged in drug use" says Sharon Walsh, PhD, a professor of behavioral science at the University of Kentucky college of medicine who studies opioid use disorder and its treatment" it's critical for people to also have behavioral interventions as needed. You need to treat the whole person to get them well"

Substance Use In Youngsters And Adolescents!

Substance Use In Youngsters And Adolescents!

Substance use among adolescents is on the rise and is happening at a very young age. A study conducted by NIDA and SAMHSA portrays some alarming statistics. The percentage of substance use among school kids has gone up by 11.33 percent. This is close to a 60 percent rise compared to the previous decade. Around 9 percent of girls and 20 percent of boys meet the adult diagnostic criteria for alcohol use. Furthermore, 20 percent of high school students were found to be daily smokers. Studies also found that while the percentage of overall abuse of the drug is steadily decreasing over the years, the availability of drug has increased to a considerable extent.

The consequences:

  1. Mortality: Motor vehicle accidents caused by drunk people have increased in the past couple of decades. Road accidents under an increased influence of alcohol have risen by a staggering 16 percent as per a CDC report. Annually, the country witnesses close to one million road accidents by adolescents and young people in the age group of 20. This is by far the biggest economic loss – a loss of productivity to the society.
  2. STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) - The sexual health hazards of adolescents remain high due to the possibility of acquiring STDs. Substance use by adolescents and young adults often leads to unprotected sex with the partner, choosing multiple sex partners and choosing partners who have a high potential of STDs. Studies have shown that young females in the age group of 15-19 suffer from gonorrhea and those in the age group of 20-24 suffer from syphilis due to high usage of substance.
  3. Crime and juvenile delinquency: There is a strong co-relation between substance use and conduct disorder among young people. Many young individuals entering the juvenile justice suffers from an array of problem ranging from substance use disorder, impaired emotion, sexual victimization, physical abuse etc. There is a growing trend of criminal activities among young people who are involved with substance use.
  4. Developmental problems: Multiple studies conducted by the Newcomb and Bentler (1989), Havighurst (1972) and Baumrind and Moselle (1985) have proved that substance use is a major barrier to the development for young people. Activities such as establishing a career, dating, raising and bearing a child, building a relationship etc. are affected because of the way people experience feelings.

Treatments: Administering treatment to a young guy suffering from substance use is of paramount importance. It helps to ensure the possible future abuse of drugs. While there are many treatment options, the one that is applicable to a drug addict depends largely on the present condition and the advancement of the effect of the drug on the body. Most doctors start the treatment with medication and lifestyle changes and suggest community service. Self-help groups also help a great deal.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!
