Sunlight can reduce weight
A new Northwestern Medicine study has reported that the timing, intensity and duration of your light exposure during the day are linked to your weight.

People who had most of their daily exposure to even moderately bright light in the morning had a significantly lower body mass index than those who had most of their light exposure later in the day.

"The earlier this light exposure occurred during the day, the lower individuals’ body mass index," said co–lead author Kathryn Reid, research associate professor of neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. "The later the hour of moderately bright light exposure, the higher a person’s BMI."

The influence of morning light exposure on body weight was independent of an individual’s physical activity level, caloric intake, sleep timing, age or season. It accounted for about 20 percent of a person’s BMI.

"Light is the most potent agent to synchronize your internal body clock that regulates circadian rhythms, which in turn also regulate energy balance," said study senior author Phyllis C. Zee, M.D. "The message is that you should get more bright light between 8 a.m. and noon." About 20 to 30 minutes of morning light is enough to affect BMI.

India is diabetic capital in the world. It is no more hereditary and anybody can gat it if one is not making conscious efforts.

Reduce the risk of diabetes by not burdening your pancreas and improving your blood sugar control by taking more fibre.
Lower the risk of heart disease
Promote weight loss by taking more protein, less carbs, less fats, and helping you feel full by fibre rich foods.
Foods high in fiber include sprouts, fruits & vegetables with skin, beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds.
Basically whenever you eat chocolate or sweet (for food cravings or sweet tooth people), just make sure you eat a cucumber also, so that fibre in cucumber or any raw veg will bind the excess sugar & fat from the diet thus will not allow your blood sugar to rise.

The people with diabetes also can apply this tip to control their blood sugar.

Obesity reduces life expectancy

Obesity reduces life expectancy
Obesity in adulthood is associated with a striking reduction in life expectancy for both men and women. Among 3457 subjects in the Framingham Study, done in the United States, those who were obese (Body Mass Index or BMI ≥30 kg/m2 at age 40 years lived 6 to 7 years less than those who were not (BMI ≤24.9 kg/m2). Those who were overweight (BMI 25 to 29.9 km/m2) at age 40 years lived about 3 years less, and those who were both obese and smoked lived 13 to 14 years less than normal–weight nonsmokers. The steady rise in life expectancy during the past two centuries may come to an end because of the increasing prevalence of obesity. Being overweight during adolescence also increase the risk of premature death as an adult. The analysis of Nurses’ Health Study has shown the risk of premature death increases with higher BMIs at age 18 years. For a BMI at age 18 of 18.5 to 21.9, 22 to 24.9, 25 to 29.9, and ≥30 kg/m2, the hazard ratio for premature death were 0.98, 1.18, 1.66, and 2.79, respectively.

A prospective study from the United States, at National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, valuated the relationship between BMI and risk of death over a maximum follow–up period of 10 years among over 500,000 men and women aged 50 to 71 years. Among the subset of individuals 50 years of age (when prevalence of chronic disease is low) who had never smoked, an increased risk of death was associated with being either overweight (20 to 50 percent increase in those between 26.5 to 29.9 kg/m2) or obese (two– to over threefold increase in those ≥30 kg/m2).

Overweight and obesity, when analyzed together, is associated with increased mortality from diabetes and kidney disease. Obesity, when analyzed alone, is associated with increased cardiac mortality and cancers considered to be obesity–related (colon, breast, esophageal, uterine, ovarian, kidney, and pancreatic cancer), but not with mortality from other cancers or non–cardiac mortality.

There are some recent studies which showed that obese people live longer. Overweight was shown to be associated with reduced mortality from non cancer, non–cardiovascular causes, but not with cancer or cardiovascular mortality. In them being underweight was associated with increased mortality from non cancer and non–cardiac causes, but not cancer and cardiac CVD causes. Obesity and increased central fat are associated with increased morbidity in addition to mortality. Overweight and obese individuals have a higher relative risk of hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and diabetes mellitus compared with normal weight individuals. The risk of hypertension and diabetes increases with increasing BMI.

In the Nurses’ Health and the Health Professionals studies, the risk of developing a chronic disease (gallstones, hypertension, heart disease, colon cancer and stroke (in men only)) increased with increasing BMI, even in those in the upper half of the healthy weight range (BMI 22.0 to 24.9 kg/m2). Obesity is measured by using a measurement called BMI, which is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters.

A BMI of 18.5 to 23 is considered normal (Asians). One below 18.5 is considered underweight and 25 or above is considered obese.

Depression as a cause of reduced sex desire
Reduced sex desire in a woman
Mr and Mrs. X came to me with c/o reduced sex desire in woman. She was 36 years old, married for 12 years, post graduate and was running her own business at home. The husband was 38 years, professional, working in a company requiring frequent travel, occasional alcohol abuser & a smoker. Morning erections were occasional. Initial time, for around 3 years were good, had sex every night. They had a 9 years old son.

The husband could recollect that it all began after the birth of son. But since then, Mrs. X would avoid intimacy, would sleep early or would tell that she had headache. Post delivery, there was no sex for 1 year. When they attempted sex, there was poor erection so it was not satisfactory. He tried to have sex with another woman where it was good. Next time, Mrs. X felt a lot of pain, vagina was dry and she presumed that it was due to operation (baby was born after lscs) the man would request for sex, but she would repeatedly take one plea or the other to avoid it.

Physical examination was normal, lab investigations were normal as well. The woman was found to be having moderate depression with sadness, disturbed sleep, reduced energy, headache and getting no pleasure from any source. We put the woman on antidepressants, gave them sex counseling with emphasis on spending quality time together, start touching, fondling and going for outing once a week. The man was suggested life style changes, quit smoking. It had magical effect in 6 weeks time. Now they are having sex 3-4 times a week and happy

How To Reduce Body Weight Without Using "Medicines"?

Weight is an important factor in our health. Overweight or underweight, little bit deviation from normal is acceptable. But gross deviation is not acceptable.
Overweight is due to the excessive amount of fat stored in the body. Calculating BMI is one way to measure our physique. Bmi chart gives a rough idea about your physique. If you sense that you are really obese, then you can try to shed some weight.
Lot of" medicines" are available in the market to shed weight. Most of them have many side effects. Instead of using medicines, you can shed weight just by following a healthy diet.
It is simple. Usually, we eat thrice daily. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. From now you eat breakfast and dinner as usual. But for lunch, follow a healthy diet.
Means, eat just vegetables and fruits. Cooked or raw vegetables, whichever you like. Eat stomach full. No restriction of the quantity of veggies and fruits. But don't eat the usual meals. Don't eat rice, wheat or whichever has more carbohydrates.
If you feel hunger during evening snacks time, again have fruits. As I said before, follow the usual diet for breakfast and dinner.
In this way you can shed at least 2 to 3kgs per month, that is around 15kgs in 6 months! in a healthy way. Without medicines.

How Dark Chocolate Can Reduce Depression?

A gift to someone or oneself, chocolate always brings a smile to the face, it is also well associated with cravings, enjoyment, pleasure, and feelings of nostalgia from childhood.

Chocolate comes in different flavors but to indulge in the right kind, is the decision one has to make to get the health benefits. Chocolate with a high concentration of cocoa makes the chocolate darker helps gain health benefits.

Incorporating a piece of dark chocolate in one’s lifestyle gives various nutrimental benefits in iron, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and zinc. Dark chocolate is also known for its health benefits for improving metabolism and reducing stress, lowering the risk of developing heart disease, improving blood flow and lower blood pressure. Studies have now found a link between dark chocolate consumption and improving depression.

A recent research study has found eating dark chocolate may positively affect mood and help relieve depression symptoms. Depression is a very common mental health issue affecting more than 300 million population worldwide according to statistics by the World Health Organisation.

Depression encompasses the following symptoms:

1. Depressed mood

2. Diminished of interest/pleasure

3. Weight gain/weight loss

4. Fatigue/loss of energy

5. Feelings of worthlessness, excessive guilt

6. Trouble concentrating

7. Recurrent thoughts of death

8. Reduced physical movements

Dark chocolate is a powerful source of antioxidant in the body helping improve inflammatory properties, which have been shown to play a role in the onset of depression. How dark chocolate helps lessen depression can be seen in its psychoactive ingredients like phenylethylamine and theobromine-stimulants, creating a feeling of euphoria and help reduce symptoms of fatigue and low energy in depression.

Tryptophan in dark chocolate produces serotonin, the happy hormone of the body. Cocoa which makes the chocolate darker contains flavanol, helping to regulate the mood and even depression. Consumption of a small amount of dark chocolate daily helps improve memory and attention, reducing trouble concentrating in depression. Dark chocolate is also seen to soothe cramps and mood swings while on periods in women.

Indulging in a good quality of concentrated dark chocolate helps reduce depression, it should definitely be included in one’s diet to help uplift the mood. While dark chocolate helps reduce depression it cannot abolish the need for therapy, to say the least
