I am taking thyronorm 25 mcg. My tsh value was 3.9 when last tested. Can I reduce the thyronorm dosage.

Hello, thanks for the query. Madam I have seen the query. The tsh value is with in normal limits. Which means the current dosage of levothyroxine (25 mcg) is correct and has to be continued. If you reduce the dosage then tsh value will go up and t4 is likely to down. Another important aspect is that with a bmi (body mass index) is 34.4 kg/sq meter (normal < 23 kg/sq meter), which means you have an excess of almost 26 kg. That needs to be taken care of. Reducing the dosage may increase the weight further. Thanks.

I'm seeing a girl for a prospective matrimonial partner. She is 27 with a height of 5’3” and weight 55 kg. She reported that she has ongoing medication of thyroxine 25 mcg for subclinical thyroid. I want to know how critical is this illness. Whether it has some serious symptoms, and implications and is curable or not. Are there implications for pregnancy complications or possibility of pass it to the child?

she said her hypothyroidism was diagnosed when she had a bit of weight gain and hair fall a couple of years back with tsh levels of 8miu/l. Does tsh levels of 8miu/l indicate subclinical hypothyroidism? Some articles online suggest tsh 8mlu/l as overt hypothyroidism and not subclinical. After that doctor suggested thyroxine 25 mcg. Now her tsh is around 2.5miu/l with the medication.

also, her mother is suffering from hypothyroidism. Is there anything to worry about? Can she live a healthy life with ongoing medication? Are there any dietary restrictions for this or does any other care need to be taken apart from the medication?

She is suferring with subclinical hypothyroidism. It is not serious condition. With tab. Of 25 mcg she is well controlled. Ask her to take this drug empty stomach and nothing except water up to 1 hour. Donot take cabbage in diet avoid calcium, iron and soya protein in breakfast. Check anti tpo test to see auto-immune status. Go for marriage, as 10 % population is suferring with this problem.

Low levels of thyroid hormone can interfere with the release of an egg from your ovary (ovulation), which impairs fertility. In addition, some of the underlying causes of hypothyroidism — such as certain autoimmune or pituitary disorders — may impair fertility.

Hello, thanks for the quey. I have seen the query. I am sure your doctor has told you that pentaprazole needs to be taken at last 30 to 40 minutes before breakfast. So please take in that fashiom. As regards taking levothyroxine, it is better if that tablet is taken early morning say around 6 am, because it is necessary to avoid taking any food or drug for almost an hour. Thanks.

Hello, thanks for the query. Madam, I have seen the details mentioned. The tsh level & dosage of levothyroxine mentioned are not so relevant today. So if you are having symptoms of hypothyroidism now, it is essential to recheck the thyroid profile and based on that the present dosage will have to be decided. It is also essential to know your current weight and height. It is also necessary for you to get lipid profile done because in hypothyroidism lipids get deranged. If you have any further questions please do come back. My suggestion is please do the necessary tests and then post the results through a private conversation so that I will be able to prescribe necessary medication. In this communication we are supposed to give only general advise, no drugs can be prescribed or recommended. Since you had pretty high tsh earlier, it is absolutely essential to restart the treatment with appropriate dosage. Another aspect is that treatment of hypothyroidism has to be taken for lifetime. It should not be discontunued. Thanks.

Yes, gut microbiota also influences the absorption of minerals that are important to the thyroid, including iodine, selenium ,zinc and iron.
