Total RBC Count Test

Total RBC Count Test

Total RBC count is a blood test that directly counts all the RBCs in a small sample of blood, this test is also termed as erythrocytes count. It is an important test because RBCs contain haemoglobin which carries oxygen to the body tissues which require oxygen to function. A hematocrit test measures the ratio of RBCs in an individuals blood. A RBC test will be recommended by doctors if they suspect the patient with conditions that affect RBCs, or if you show symptoms of low blood oxygen which may include confusion, irritability, irregular breathing etc.

The RBC Count test is a simple blood test performed at the doctors clinic, It doesn’t require any special type of preparation. It is better to tell the healthcare worker if the patient has a medical condition or using a supplement that causes excessive bleeding. In case the patients have felt nauseated, lightheaded or have fainted while having blood drawn in the past then such details should be provided to the healthcare worker. The patients should seek and obey the instructions that have been provided to them by the healthcare personnel regarding the food that has to be consumed or avoided prior to the tests.

The RBC Count test will signify the number of red blood cells in a volume of blood. Normal range varies slightly between laboratories but is generally from 4.2 to 5.9 million cells/cmm. If the result of RBC Count test is low it may suggest anemia, which can have many causes. If the RBC Count test result is high then it may because the patient may be suffering from bone marrow diseases or low blood oxygen levels which can also be termed as hypoxia. Therefore, A RBC Count test is prescribed by the doctors to analyse the health condition of the patient which could be due to high or low RBC count.

In the RBC Count test the doctors will draw blood from the patient's vein, usually on the inside of their elbow. The following sequence is followed while drawing the blood: 1. The healthcare personnel will usually clean the area to be pricked with an antiseptic. 2. They will tie an elastic band around the patient's upper arm to make their vein swell with blood. 3. A needle will be gently inserted into the vein and the blood will be collected in an attached vial or tube. 4. The healthcare provider will send the blood samples to the laboratory for analysis.

A high count of red blood cells in the urine can indicate infection, trauma, tumors, or kidney stones. If red blood cells seen under microscopy look distorted, they suggest kidney as the possible source and may arise due to kidney inflammation (glomerulonephritis). Red or white blood cells.Blood cells aren't found in urine normally. Inflammation, disease, or injury to the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra can cause blood in urine. Strenuous exercise, such as running a marathon, can also cause blood in the urine. White blood cells may be a sign of infection or kidney disease.

Hi I am 23 years male and I am having excessive hairloss since past one year, at first I thought the cause of my hair loss could be the drastic change in my diet as I moved from my hometown to some other place for work where I was not having enough healthy food but it was later when I realized that I am losing hairs more then ever and the density of hairs on my head got less and at times even my scalp is visible, I had got very much concerned and consulted trichologist a month ago. After diagnosing me at first she claimed that I may have male pattern baldness and asked me if I have a family history of baldness which I clearly denied, then she asked me to have tests like CBC, TSH and Ferritin, the results of which are Red Blood Cell Count "5.73" HIGH 4.5-5.5 Hemoglobin "12.4" LOW 13.0-17.0 Hematocrit "39.0" LOW 40 -50 Mean Corpuscular vol "68" LOW 83-101 Mean Corpuscular HGB "21.6" LOW 27.0-32.0 Red Cell Distribution Width "16.3" HIGH 11.6-14.0 Rest all are in normal range in CBC. RBC====> MILD ANISOCYTOSIS SEEN, NORMOCYTES, microcytic WITH HYPOCHROMASIA (+) SEEN. FERRITIN "116.1" 22-322 (normal) TSH 3rd Generation "1.424" 0.55-4.78 (normal) After seeing my test report the doctor has confirmed that I have IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA and it is because of which I am having excessive hair loss and prescribed me with 1 month iron tablet fered XT which is 100 mg Ferrous Ascorbate and 1.5 mg Folic Acid. Now the queries I have are 1) Do I really have iron deficiency anemia? If yes how severe is it? 2) Is this iron deficiency anemia the sole reason for my excessive hairloss? 3) for this test result how long do I have to take iron supplements? 4) how long will it really take for me to see active results in my hair growth? 5) will I get back the hairs I have lost? 6) what could be the main cause of iron deficiency in me? 7) does iron deficiency causes urine urge incontinence? I am facing urine urge incontinence, it is just totally uncontrollable sometimes and I lose it. Waiting for your response. thank you.

Kidney Disease - How It Is Related With Anaemia?

A healthy kidney produces a hormone known as the erythropoietin. The latter assists the bone marrow to produce an adequate amount of RBC that carries oxygen to every nook and corner of the body. A damaged kidney results in less RBC production, thereby, creating a condition known as anaemia. The hemoglobin count in the blood reduces significantly in this condition.

Anaemia is characterized by shortness of breath, weakness and tiredness. It can affect sleep and a loss of appetite. A patient suffering from anaemia reports of frequent headaches and a faster heart rate. These symptoms also surface when a person suffers from chronic kidney diseases (CKD). The condition gets worse as the disease progresses.

Treating anaemia:
A patient suffering from anaemia should be treated on time as there are many pitfalls of a lower hemoglobin level. The treatment will give instant relief from other symptoms that might have arrived with CKD. Doctors frequently prescribe Erythropoiesis Stimulating Agent (ESA) for patients suffering from CKD and suffering from anaemia due to the shortage of erythropoietin. ESAs can be injected through an injection or intravenously. These injections stimulate the bone marrow to produce more RBCs. However, studies have revealed that ESAs increase the chance of strokes, heart attacks and blood clots. Furthermore, they aggravate tumor growth and shorten life expectancy for cancer patients. People undergoing ESA treatment should have periodic check-ups to ensure that the hemoglobin count is normal and under control.

Iron
Iron count in the body has an important role in treating patients suffering from anaemia and CKD. In case the level of iron is too low in the body, ESAs fail to improve the condition of an anaemic patient. The ferritin count of a patient should be in the range of 100-800 mcg/L. One more test known as TSAT reveals the number of iron required to produce RBCs in the body. In case the iron count is less, doctors often suggest iron pills to bring the count to a more accepted level.

Other causes
There could be other reasons for anaemia as well. A doctor might further investigate the level of B12 and folic acid present in the body. Even an inflammatory condition can lead to anaemia. A decreased count of any of the above mentioned ingredients can cause anaemia to a patient suffering from EKD.

Food items necessary to improve the condition
A healthy diet helps in improving the condition of an anaemic patient. Iron deficiency is best addressed by fish and beef. Food rich in vitamin C helps the body to absorb more iron in the body. Certain food items that block the entry of iron in the body include tea, milk, albumen (egg white) etc. Therefore, you should be strictly avoid these items from your diet.

Arthritis and Its Ayurvedic Treatments!

Arthritis is a disorder that is characterized by inflammation of the joints. This disorder usually develops after the age of 65; however, it does not mean that people from other age groups aren’t at any risk whatsoever. Obesity is one of the major triggers of this condition.

Arthritis can be of two types:

  1. Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is a condition that is characterized by inflammation and stiffness in the joint caused due to injury, age or obesity.
  2. Rheumatoid Arthritis: Rheumatoid arthritis is a disorder wherein the immune system attacks the healthy tissues and cells of the joint.

Causes:

The cartilage is a flexible connective tissue present in your joints. Its function is to cushion the joints from pressure and shock. Any drop in the amounts of cartilage present leaves one immensely prone to this condition. While on one hand, osteoarthritis is generally caused by normal wear and tear of the joints, rheumatoid arthritis is caused by the immune system erroneously attacking the healthy cells of the joint.

Symptoms:

The symptoms of this disorder are stiffness of the joints, swelling and a sharp stinging joint pain. Arthritis has a tremendous impact on one’s mobility, reducing it to a great degree. The symptoms of arthritis tend to get worse in the morning. Rheumatoid arthritis can also result in significant loss of appetite, because of the inflammation of the immune system. Reduction in the RBC count is also common in case of rheumatoid arthritis.

Ayurveda For Arthritis:

According to Ayurveda mostly pains are caused by the aggravation of vata (air) dosha. Arthritis is a condition which is caused by accumulation of ama and aggravation of vata. (Ama is a toxic by-product of improper digestion). This ama circulates in the whole body and deposits or gets collected at the sites which are weaker. When it deposits in the joints and at the same time there is aggravation of vata , it results in a disease called amavata. This amavata is arthritis.

Since arthritis is caused due to vata aggravation, the main aim of Ayurvedic treatment for arthritis is to balance and stabilize vata in the body. This can be done by strengthening the alimentary canal and the metabolic pathway. This ensures that the circulatory channels not blocked by impurities and are open and performing well, and that nourishment is delivered to joints. To achieve this, you may have to drink lots of water and detoxify your body periodically. You may also try various Ayurvedic home remedies which are designed specifically to treat arthritis, improving your range of motion and giving you increased mobility.

An Ayurvedic diet can help strengthen the digestive system, preventing the formulation of ama. The nutritional plasma that is thus created, is pure and can be assimilated into the body completely and easily. A healthy, balanced diet can also improve lubrication of joints, effectively preventing arthritis or degeneration of the joints. Ayurvedic remedies promote natural healing for arthritis, decreasing the rate of progression of degeneration of your joints and promoting their health.

Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that focuses on treating the root cause of the problem along with treating the symptoms of arthritis. Unlike conventional treatments, Ayurveda is entirely natural and is free from side effects.

Tips for Ayurvedic Treatment of Arthritis

  1. Partial fasting is beneficial in order get rid of these toxins.
  2. Consuming a cup of lukewarm water mixed with lemon juice and honey early in the morning is recommended.
  3. Using mustard or sesame oil to massage the body helps in reducing the ‘vata’.
  4. Fenugreek is an excellent natural inhibitor of ama and corrector of the vata dosha. It is a natural remedy for arthritis. Use fenugreek seeds in your food.
  5. A hot oil massage of your joints can be really helpful, especially in the winter months. Castor oil and sesame seed oil, both are great for a hot massage of your joints. If your joints are very painful, massage them lightly.
  6. Meditate for bringing down your stress levels and dealing with anxiety. Stress and anxiety are a major reason for the development of ama in your body. The more relaxed you are, the more efficient your body will be.
  7. Go to bed on time and wake up early in the morning. Disrupting the natural sleep cycle can aggravate all the doshas in the body and can also result in worry, stress, anxiety and fear. Taking control of your life and your daily schedule will only help you get rid of arthritis.
  8. Avoid hot and spicy foods. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ayurveda.

Colorectal Cancer - In a Nutshell!

Colorectal cancer is otherwise known as cancer of the colon or the rectum. This can affect both men and women with age being a major risk factor. Majority of such cancers are seen to occur after age of 50 years.

  1. Type: Colorectal cancers can present as one of the following types:

    1. Adenocarcinomas are the most common type of colorectal cancers. These cancers begin in the cells making mucous and other fluids. Certain colorectal cancers begin as adenomatous polyps (adenomas) that turn cancerous over a period of time. This is precisely why the adenomas are regarded as pre-cancerous or pre-malignant.

    2. Gastrointestinal (GI) carcinoid tumors, GI stromal tumors, primary colorectal lymphoma, leiomyosarcoma, melanoma & squamous cell carcinoma are certain other colorectal cancers

      • Carcinoid tumors: start in specialized cells that produce hormones, in the intestine.

      • GI Stromal tumors: start in the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC), in the wall of the colon.

      • Lymphomas: start typically in the lymph nodes but they may also start in colon or rectum.

      • Sarcomas: can start in the muscle and the connective tissue in the walls of the colon and rectum.

  2. Gender: It affects both male and female populace.

  3. Etiology: Mostly, the factors that are associated with increased risk of colorectal cancer include the following –

    1. Age exceeding 50 years.

    2. Racial & ethnic background such as African Americans, in the USA, are known to have the highest incidence of colorectal cancer, and mortality rates.

    3. Low fibre and high fat diet. Excessive consumption of red meat (e.g. goat meat, beef, pork, lamb, or liver), processed meats, butter, refined grains, sweets, sugary drinks etc all can increase the risk of colorectal cancer.

    4. Personal history of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) (e.g. ulcerative colitis), Crohn’s disease, adenomatous colorectal polyps, colorectal cancer etc all.

    5. Family history of colorectal cancer or adenomatous polyps etc all.

    6. Inherited syndromes such as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and Lynch syndrome (hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer or HNPCC).

    7. Sedentary lifestyle/ associated Obesity.

    8. Type 2 diabetes.

    9. Tobacco and alcohol abuse.

  4. Features or symptoms can vary from person to person depending on the size and location of the tumour. Following are the signs & symptoms mainly -

    1. Changes in bowel habits, diarrhea or constipation or an alternating diarrhea and constipation.

    2. Occult/ blood in the stool, and

    3. Problems related to blood loss (e.g. anemia, weakness, fatigue, intolerance to exercise, shortness of breath, increased heart rate, chest pain etc all),

    4. Abdominal discomfort (frequent gas/ flatulence, bloating, fullness, cramps, and pain), vomiting etc.

    5. Unexplained weight loss,

    6. Pain with bowel movement,

    7. Feeling that bowel does not empty completely,

    8. Stools are narrower than usual.

  5. Diagnosis: Following are the diagnostics employed. Abnormal blood test results may be indicative of malignancy, but a follow-up imaging/ biopsy is always the gold standard for accurate diagnosis.
    1. Blood: fecal occult blood test, Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) assay values are raised, Hb/ RBC counts may be low.
    2. Imaging: Colonoscopy, Endorectal Scan/ CT Scan followed by Biopsy clinches the diagnosis and the nature of the disease.
    3. Apart from the above-mentioned barium enema X-Ray, USG, Chest X-ray, PET CT scan etc all help detect metastasis, if any. An increase in level of the serum tumor marker ‘CEA’ is indicative of metastatic spread/ proliferation that can be ascertained through a PET CT scan.
  6. Treatment: Conventional treatment includes surgery, radiation and chemotherapy as contextually appropriate. Simultaneously, an adjunctive/ integrative naturopathic treatment with suitable complementary & alternative medicines (CAM)/ therapies too can help improve clinical outcomes and facilitate recovery as feasible contextually.
  7. Prognosis: Preventive measures, earlier diagnosis and right early treatment is key for better prognosis and efficient/ effective therapeutic management. Usually, the chances of cure for an early stage cancer are more. Above-mentioned apart, recovery chances are influenced by the grade, stage of cancer, recurrence and the patient’s general health & vitality etc all too.

  8. Prevention: Rightly said, prevention is always a better choice. Although genetic risks are difficult to modify, still an adherence to a Mediterranean diet, maintaining an ideal body weight and an active lifestyle with due emphasis on regular exercising (for at least 30 minutes daily), de-stressing and relaxation is highly recommended for prevention or reducing the risks of colorectal cancer. A healthy eating plate comprises essentially a low fat diet, fibre rich foods including whole grain cereals, green leafy vegetables cooked using healthy vegetable oils, fresh fruits of all colours as seasonally available and healthy proteins/ fats including fresh fish, poultry, beans, nuts etc all. It is advisable to limit milk/ dairy, preferably of low fat content, to 1 to 2 servings max daily. Although alcohol is optional and is not for everyone, the consumption of the same, if any, has to be strictly in moderation, and is best avoided. Smoking is to be avoided as well. Again, red meat, butter, refined grains, sweets, sugary drinks including carbonated beverages and other high calorie foods etc all, if any, are to be taken sparingly or are best avoided too. Apart from the generic preventive measures as mentioned above, certain pre-malignant conditions, of which adenomas are the most common, can be successfully treated with complementary and alternative medicines too.

Iron Deficiency - 7 Signs to Help You Spot it!

As per the latest statistics published by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, about 9% women suffer from a deficiency of iron. Though the proportion is relatively low, iron deficiency can lead to various diseases, which can be very difficult to cure. So, look out for these telltale signs of iron deficiency and check whether you suffer from any of them.

  1. Fatigue: Your internal system uses iron for the production of haemoglobin, which is a component in the red blood cells, responsible for carrying oxygen to all parts of the body. So when the iron content is low, there is not enough haemoglobin production and all organ do not receive oxygen in the required quantities. This is bound to make you feel tired at most times.
  2. Inability to focus: People with iron deficiency often suffer from alteration in the synthesis of neurotransmitters. This can lead to decreased functionality and focusing abilities. This may also lead to the development of apathy towards all things, including family, friends, books, music or anything that you loved and enjoyed doing.
  3. Breathlessness: Without a proper supply of iron, there could be an oxygen crunch in the body, compelling you to feel breathless. This may happen anytime when you are working out or walking or reading a book.
  4. Paleness: Do you think your skin has lost lustre and become pale in the last few days? That’s definitely not a good sign and may be a symptom of decreased flow of blood and reduction in the RBC count.
  5. Trouble doing your daily chores: Low levels of iron in the body can cause your endurance level to suffer. Thus, you may find it difficult to run up the stairs or catch a vehicle or swim for a while.
  6. Soreness of muscles: Even if you could push yourself to reach the gym, you would experience the burns last longer than normal. Lack of right amount of iron prevents your muscles to recover at the right pace. As a result, you are likely to suffer from muscle aches.
  7. Brittle nails: If there is a recent a development of spoon shaped or concave depression in the nails, it could be a sign of possible deficiency of iron.

Often people tend to ignore the warning signs that the body gives to inform about the problem that’s cropping up. But you can’t take chances with your health and so, check for these signs without any delay. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.
