Urine BS and BP Test

Urine BS and BP Test

also known as: BS BP Random Urine

Urine BS and BP, is also known as ‘total bile pigments’ and ‘bile salt tests’. It is mainly performed to measure the level of bile salts and urobilinogen from a sample of random urine. The main objective of this test is to detect jaundice, pruritus in pregnancy, and various liver disorders. Generally, urobilinogen is found in low concentration but a higher value of urobilinogen in the sample urine indicates malfunctioning of the liver. The primary requirement here is the sample of urine. The patient needs to urinate and then their urine samples are sent to the laboratory for testing. Based on those reports, a doctor would decide the further course of treatment.

There is no special preparation needed for total bile pigments and bile salt tests. Prior to this test, one simply needs to inform the doctor if one is under any kind of medication or suffering from any kind of allergies or not. Depending on the condition and situation, the doctor will give further advice. Since urine is the primary requirement here, it is recommended that one should drink a glass of water before this test so that they can urinate easily. This test doesn’t take long, it is over as soon as the urine sample is collected. After that, the sample is sent to the lab for further study.

Total Bile Pigments and Bile Salt Tests are mainly performed on sample of random urine. This test is conducted for various purposes - Urine contains urobilinogen. A higher concentration of urobilinogen indicates liver disorders. It can diagnose infections in urinary tract, metabolism and even diabetes. Orange colour urine indicates the presence of bilirubin. Too much bilirubin content is an indication of jaundice or any major liver dysfunction. Red urine indicates the presence of blood in urine. This test is also performed to detect pruritus in pregnancy.

The Total Bile Pigments and Bile Salt Tests are performed on a sample of urine taken from the concerned patient. The urine sample may be a random one or the first excretion of the day. The sample is simply collected on the basis of the advice of the doctor. Here are the basic methods which this test includes – Urine is collected in a glass container and then it is carefully labelled with the name of the patient written on it. It is then sent to the laboratory for further culture and examination. All examinations must be completed within 1 or 2 hours from collection
