USG Scan - Abcess Drainage Test

USG Scan - Abcess Drainage Test

An abscess is formed as a confined area of pus in tissues or organs of the body. A USG scan of the suspected area helps to locate the abscess and distinguish it from simple cellulitis. This scan is done to visually guide the technician into carefully draining the pus and bacterial liquid. A minimally invasive procedure, it helps to carefully drain abscesses.

Sedatives maybe injected in you to numb the area to be intervened. You might feel a slight pin prick when the IV line is connected. Slight pressure maybe felt when catheter is inserted.

A USG scan of the abscess drainage site is helpful to detect the following: Identifying abscesses, Draining of abscess fluids, Localizing abscess fluids.

You will be required to lie down on the examining table. An intravenous line (IV) will be connected and sedatives given to you. The area of interest will be numbed and sterilized. With USG imaging, a catheter will be attached from the abscess after making a very small skin incision. A drainage bag will be attached with the catheter as long as the fluid keeps draining into it.

Average price range of the test is between Rs.70 to Rs.600 depending on the factors of city, quality and availablity.
