VLDL Cholesterol Calculated Test

The very low density lipids test is a simple blood test used to assess the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The test measures the amount of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) in your blood. Lipoproteins are made up of cholesterol, triglycerides, and proteins. They move cholesterol, triglycerides, and other lipids (fats) to around the body. VLDL is one of the three main types of lipoproteins. VLDL contains the highest amount of triglycerides. VLDL is a type of 'bad cholesterol' because it helps cholesterol build up on the walls of arteries leading to coronary heart disease.

You may need to fast for 9 to 12 hours before this test. You can drink only water during this period. You need to inform the laboratory professional about any medicines or supplements you are taking as consumption of some of them can alter the test results. You are advised to wear a loose half sleeve or sleeveless shirt for ease of drawing blood for the test. You can wear a full sleeve shirt also, provided the sleeve can be rolled up easily. No other special preparation is needed.

This test is used to assess the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases due to the presence of very low density lipoprotein in the blood. This test is usually ordered for people with advancing age, having a family history of heart related problems, smokers, suffering from diabetes, is obese or lead a sedentary lifestyle. Low levels of VLDL cholesterol are not generally a concern. An elevated level of VLDL cholesterol, like elevated LDL cholesterol, is considered a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Depending on the level, your doctor will devise an appropriate treatment plan for you.

An alcohol pad is used to clean the skin. A needle is then injected through the part of the rinsed skin into your vein. The blood is then dragged out from the needle by a nozzle, saved in a vessel and sealed with your name. This sample is then sent to the research laboratory for examination.
