About Acipimox
Acipimox is an imitative derivative of Vitamin B3 which is often used as an anti-hyperlipidemic agent. Antihyperlipidemic agents are also known as lipid lowering agents which are effective against high levels of fats in the blood such as cholesterol.
Acipimox inhibits the enzyme called triglyceride lipase, thereby reducing the fat and fatty acids in the blood and their flow to the liver. This medicine is absorbed from the intestines, and is not bound to plasma proteins. Low density lipo-protein is reduced in the body due to the effect of Acipimox.
This medicine is not to be consumed by patients who are having existing or previous complications like peptic ulcers, myocardial infarction, renal insufficiency etc.
Side effect of this medicine may include flushing, indigestion, palpitation, headache etc. Flushing is a condition in which the skin, especially the face becomes reddened. Often other parts of the body also gets heated and reddened in such condition, the most common of which are the ears. Gastro-intestinal disorders like indigestion, constipation, acidic throat etc can also happen. Acipimox is safe if taken in proper dosage under doctor's supervision. Nausea and vomiting are some effects which have also been seen in patients.
