About Acnedap 5 % Gel

Acnedap 5 % Gel which is also known as diaminodiphenyl sulfone or DDS for short, is an antibiotic which is commonly used in combination with rifampicin and clofazimine for the treatment of leprosy. It is also used as a second-line medication for the treatment and prevention of pneumocystis pneumonia and also in the prevention of toxoplasmosis in those patients who have poor immune function. In addition, it is also used in the treatment of acne, dermatitis herpetiformis, and other various skin related conditions. Acnedap 5 % Gel is available both topically and by mouth. Acnedap 5 % Gel via the mouth was one of the first medications used in the treatment of moderate to severe acne, and is still sometimes prescribed for the treatment of severe cases.

Hypersensitivity reactions occur in some patients who are on this medication. This reaction may be more frequent in patients who are receiving multiple-drug therapy. The reaction always involves a rash and may also include fever, jaundice, and eosinophilia. In general, the symptoms should occur within the first six weeks of the treatment or not at all, and may be ameliorated by corticosteroid therapy. The most common side effects of this medication are dose-related hemolysis and methemoglobinemia.

    How does this medication work?

    This medication belongs to the class of an antibiotic used for the treatment of leprosy. The drug interferes with the bacterial synthesis and the formation of dihydrofolic acid. This replaces the para-aminobenzoate and thus helps reduce the symptoms related to leprosy.
