Amikacin
About Amikacin
Amikacin is prescribed to treat a variety of bacterial infections of lungs, skin, abdomen, and blood caused by E.coli, Streptococci, and Enterococci. It is also used to treat bone infections, respiratory tract infections, endocarditis, and septicemia.
This medicine is known to cause serious kidney problems and hearing problems, especially in the elderly population. Do not take this medicine if you have a known allergy to it. Tinnitus or vertigo may be indications of vestibular injury and impending bilateral irreversible damage which may occur, which is a possible adverse reaction of this medication.
Inform your doctor if you feel fullness in the head, change in urinary pattern, the sign of opportunistic infections like sore throat, white plague, mouth sores, chills or vaginal discharge. Be cautious if you have renal damage, as this medicine may worsen your condition. But this effect is usually reversible.
Symptoms of overdose include ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, and neuromuscular toxicity. Treatment of choice following a single acute overdose appears to be the maintenance of good urine output of at least 3 mL/kg/hour.
Dialysis is of questionable value in the enhancement of aminoglycoside elimination. If required, hemodialysis is preferred over peritoneal dialysis in patients with normal renal function.
Dose and/or frequency of administration must be monitored and modified in patients with renal impairment; drug should be discontinued if signs of ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, or hypersensitivity occur.
Ototoxicity is proportional to the amount of drug given and the duration of treatment; tinnitus or vertigo may be indications of vestibular injury and impending bilateral irreversible damage; renal damage is usually reversible.
