About Aminosalicylic acid

Aminosalicylic acid is used in combination with other drugs to treat tuberculosis. The treatment for active tuberculosis may last for up to 6 months, or maybe even longer. It requires the usage of this medicine in combination with other medications. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria, and ultimately killing them. This is an antibacterial antibiotic, and hence will not work in cases of infections caused due to other agents. Unnecessary use may lead to eventual ineffectiveness of the medicine. This medicine is administered orally, and is available in the form of granules.

Most people experience little or no adverse effects on taking this medicine. Side effects include nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea and vomiting. However, please inform your doctor if you notice black or bloody stools, or vomit that contains blood. In rare cases, Aminosalicylic acid may cause liver damage. Stop taking this medicine if you observe dark urine, rashes followed by fever, persistent nausea or vomiting, yellowing of eyes, or any symptoms of jaundice or abnormal functioning of the liver.

Inform you doctor of your medical conditions, especially if you have these conditions: G-6-Pd deficiency, liver problems, kidney problems or stomach ulcers. Also tell them about your previous allergic reactions.
