The syrup works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, promoting mucus clearance with the help of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and local anaesthetic effects. It reduces the production of phlegm in the air passages.

Ascoril syrup is an alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist belonging to the phenethylamine class, which acts as a nasal decongestant. It works by narrowing the swelling of blood vessels in the ear and nose, thereby providing great relief from discomfort. Also, by suppressing the nervous system and the part of your brain which is responsible for coughing. Lastly, this drug binds to the histamine H1 receptor, which prevents the action from endogenous histamine.
