About Benfotiamine

Benfotiamine is used for the treatment of thiamine deficiency including beriberi, Wernicke's encephalopathy syndrome, and peripheral neuritis associated with pellagra, alcoholic patients with altered sensorium; various genetic metabolic disorders.

The active constituent of this medicine is derived from thiamine, thus it is used as a dietary supplement. It helps to raise tissue and blood levels of thiamine, which then helps to protect the body from any med conditions arising from low levels of thiamine such as heart and nerve disorders. It also helps against diabetic neuropathy.

The drug is easily absorbed through cell membranes, thus making it easier for it to be transported to the cells that most require it. It has been observed that this medicine may trigger an upset stomach and a decrease in blood pressure.     How does this medication work?

    The active constituent of this medication behaves as a lipid-based synthetic analogue of Thymine or Vitamin B1 with greater bioavailability than other Thiamine salts. It is dephosphorylated by Ecto-alkaline phosphatases to S-benzoyl thiamine in the intestinal mucosa, which is then hydrolyzed to thiamine by liver thioesterases.
