About Benzophenone

Benzophenone is an organic compound found in fruits, mainly in grapes, which is used in different pharmacological purposes, mainly in production of sunscreen. It falls in the category of benzene derivative called benzhydryl compounds. The main usage of this medicine is prevention and protection from sunburn.

Benzophenone has a form of white solid substance with a fresh odor like flowers. It may be obtained in dry powdered or liquid form. This compound is administered topically and sometimes used in therapy for psoriasis and similar skin disorders. Apart from being used in personal care and cosmetic products Benzophenone is also used in various industrial products with photosensitive characteristic.

The drug is basically safe and can be bought over the counter. But improper usage may produce some side effects. If it is ingested or consumed it may result in gastrointestinal disturbances. If it happens to come in contact with eyes then it needs to be washed off immediately as it may cause eye irritation, reddening, blurred vision, and other ophthalmic problems. Very prolonged use in greater amount than required may give rise to skin problems like allergies and rashes as well.

    This medication contains a photosensitive agent which is used as a topical sunscreen due to its photosensitive nature. It actively absorbs, reflects, and disperses UV radiations between 290nm and 400nm wavelengths, which include the harmful UVA and UVB radiations.
