About Bethanechol

Bethanechol is used to treat the problem of urinary incontinence. It causes stimulation to the bladder muscles to contract so that there can be easier flow of urine. It is called a cholinergic agent. It may be used for other purposes as decided by the doctor. You must take due precautions if you are allergic to any of the components of the drug. Undergo a thorough diagnosis if you have previously suffered from liver, heart, lung or kidney diseases, if you have fluctuating blood pressure, a history of abdominal or gastric problems like inflammation of stomach lining, ulcers, or if you are suffering from respiratory problems like asthma. You must make the doctor aware if you taking any prescription drugs or hormonal oral contraceptives.     How does this medication work?

    This medicine works to treat urinary bladder inconsistency by directly stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system cholinergic receptors and also slightly stimulates the ganglia. This increases detrusor urinae muscles to stimulate micturition. It also increases gastric muscle tone to stimulate gastric motility.
