Carbidopa

Prescription vs OTC : Prescription by Doctor required

About Carbidopa

Carbidopa helps in treating Parkinson's disease. It is advised to take this medication with drugs along with levodopa. It enables a lower dosage of levodopa to be used and more rapid response to be obtained and to decrease side-effects.

Do not consume iron salts within 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking Carbidopa. Don’t consume this drug if you are allergic to Carbidopa or any other ingredient. Also, you are advised not to use this medication if you have narrow-angle glaucoma.

Immediately consult your doctor if you have increased sexual urges, unusual urges to gamble, or other intense urges while taking this medicine. In some cases after using this drug sweat, urine, or saliva appears dark in colour, such as red, brown, or black. It is not a harmful side effect, but it may cause staining of clothes or bed sheets.

This drug is a peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor with little or no pharmacological activity when given alone in usual doses. It inhibits the peripheral decarboxylation of levodopa to dopamine; and as it does not cross the blood-brain barrier, unlike levodopa, effective brain concentrations of dopamine are produced with lower doses of levodopa.

At the same time, reduced peripheral formation of dopamine reduces peripheral side-effects, notably nausea and vomiting, and cardiac arrhythmias, although the dyskinesias and adverse mental effects associated with levodopa therapy tend to develop earlier.
