Prescription vs OTC : Prescription by Doctor required

About Carisoprodol

Carisoprodol, a prodrug related to meprobamate, is a centrally acting muscle relaxant of carbamate class, used to treat problems related to skeletal muscle such as pain or injury. Other medical uses of this drug involve somnolence, euphoria, anxiolysis, muscle relaxation, sedation and analgesia.

Carisoprodol, a central nervous system depressant, acts as a sedative and skeletal muscle relaxant. The drug interrupts neuronal communication within the reticular formation and spinal cord and thus helps in sedation and alters the pain perception, instead of acting directly on skeletal muscle.

Carisoprodol is marketed as tablets of 250mg and 350mg. Medication involves oral ingestion thrice daily and at bedtime up to 2 to 3 weeks. This drug is recommended for short term usage as the evidences of effectiveness is inadequate for prolonged use and painful musculoskeletal conditions are usually of short time.

Before using the medicine, a physician should be informed regarding the taking of other drugs that cause drowsiness such as opioid pain and cough relievers, antihistamines, alcohol, other drugs for sleep or anxiety or other muscle relaxants.

Side effects of Carisoprodol include drowsiness, headache, dizziness, allergic reactions, troubled breathing, confusion and others.
