Cefprozil

Prescription vs OTC : Prescription by Doctor required

About Cefprozil

Cefprozil, an antibiotic of second generation cephalosporin type, is marketed as tablets or as liquid suspension. It is used in the treatment of certain mild to moderate bacterial infections. It interferes with the formation of the bacterial cell wall during its growth, ultimately killing the bacteria.

Cefprozil is prescribed for patients suffering from bronchitis, ear infections, pharyngitis, acute sinusitis, uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections, pneumonia, pyelonephritis, otitis media, cystitis and other mild bacterial problems.

Cefprozil is available in various strength(s) such as 125mg/5ml, 250mg/5ml (for liquid suspension) and 250mg, 500mg (for tablets). The dosage must be taken as per doctor’s instructions. It works best if taken at the same time each day, until the full course of the treatment is completed. Discontinuation of the medicine should be avoided even if the symptoms disappear within a few days to prevent the return of the infection.

Side effects of Cefprozil include tiredness, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, mild diarrhoea, dizziness, headache, itching in the genital area. Severe side effects like severe diarrhoea, bloody stools, severe stomach cramps, allergic reactions, vaginal irritations or discharge, yellowing of skin or eyes, if seen to occur requires medical attention.
