It can prevent the coagulation of blood in the lungs thereby controlling respiratory problems caused as a result. It is also used to inhibit the hardening of arteries, and the lumping of blood especially after undergoing a heart valve replacement surgery, a knee replacement surgery or a hip replacement surgery. The drug blocks the actions of a coagulating protein called thrombin to main the smooth circulation of blood throughout the body. The medicine is in the form of a capsule which needs to be taken orally, with or without food as directed by the doctor. It is important to avoid antacids as they may interfere with the functions of the drug.

Side effects of this drug may include the thinning of the blood making the patient prone to easy bleeding and bruising. Some reactions such as nose bleeding may occur.
