Degarelix
About Degarelix
Degarelix is a type of hormonal therapy that is used to treat prostate cancer. It is an artificial protein that helps in reducing the amount of some specific hormones in our body, especially testosterone which causes growth of the tumor. It works on the interaction of GnRH in the pituitary glands by blocking the Gnrh receptors which reduces luteinising hormone, follicle stimulating hormone and in turn results in decreased testosterone levels.
It is advised that you should not use Degarelix if you are allergic to it or any ingredient in it. You should also first consult your doctor before using it if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding, taking any medications, supplements or herbal preparations, have any heart rhythm disorder or any heart disease, kidney or liver disease, eletrolyte imbalance, or a family or personal history of Long QT syndrome.
The side effects you may encounter after taking Degarelix include headache, dizziness, fast heartbeats, chest pain, problem or pain during urination, rapid weight gain, swelling, shortness of breath, anxiety, high blood pressure, blurred vision, feeling tired, back or joint pain, liver problems, losing interest in sex, swelling or pain at the site of injection. You should see a doctor immediately if these symptoms become bothersome or last for long durations.
Degarelix is administered as an injection given under the skin in the area around your stomach. It is given once in every 28 days and should be administered only by a medical professional. You should take frequent blood tests while under treatment with Degarelix and should consult your doctor for the appropiate dosage.
