Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant used for treating cough that is caused by asthma, smoking and emphysema. It affects the signals in the brain that trigger cough reflex.
Dextromethorphan provides symptomatic relief of coughs caused by minor viral upper respiratory tract infections or inhaled irritants. It is most effective for a chronic nonproductive cough.
Ask a doctor about using Dextromethorphan if you have chronic bronchitis or emphysema. Do not use it if you are using or have used an MAO inhibitor within the past 14 days of the treatment. This medicine is not recommended for children younger than 4 years of age.
