Diloxanide
About Diloxanide
Diloxanide, an antiprotozoal agent, is the most effective medicine for the patients suffering from amoeba infections (mainly caused by Entamoeba histolytica). As far as health issues are concerned, this is one of the safest medicines.
Recommended dosage is 500mg three times a day for 10 days and the course may be repeated if needed. However excess dosage should be avoided. The mechanism of action of this medicine is, however, unknown. But, as it is a luminal amoebicide it is assumed to work by destroying the trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica which then form into cysts and the cysts are then excreted out of the body.
The structure of this medication can be related to chloramphenicol as it acts by blocking protein synthesis. The furoate salt of this drug behaves as a prodrug which is metabolized in the gastrointestinal tract to produce diloxanide, the active drug. About 90% of each dose is excreted by urine and the rest through feces.
