Prescription vs OTC : Prescription by Doctor not required

About Docusate

Docusate helps treat constipation and makes stool soft and less hard. Thus, Docusate essentially works as a stool softener, and ads in water as well as fat into the stool to make it softer.

It is important to provide your medical practitioner with a full medical history, before you begin the treatment course. Give him a list of allergies, any health problems you currently have and if you are seeking medication for any of them. Tell him if you have experienced obstruction in bowel movements or suffer from abdominal pain, vomiting and bleeding of the rectum.

The drug should be taken orally either with a meal or without. You can drink water to gulp it down. Ensure you take in plenty of fluids when on this drug. You may expect a bowel movement in about a day or two after taking Docusate.

As in the case of all medicines, Docusate too results in a few side effects such as gas, bad taste in the mouth, diarrhea, bloating, irritation of the throat and cramping.

Although these side effects are quite minor, if they do not go away or become worse, be sure to get in touch with your medical adviser and seek proper treatment.
