Fibrinogen

Prescription vs OTC : Prescription by Doctor required

About Fibrinogen

Fibrinogen is a type of protein classified as glycoprotein. It is one of the 13 essential coagulation factors that is produced in the liver and helps in blood clot formation. When you suffer an injury and bleeding occurs, the soluble Fibrinogen in your body coverts into insoluble threads and forms a net kind of structure that adheres at the site of injury until it has healed.

The test conducted to check the Fibrinogen levels in your body is known as Factor I assay. This test is recommended by the doctors if you have a ruptured spleen, bleeding in your head, blood in stool or urine, hemorrhage in the gastriointestinal tract, frequent nose bleeds, excessive bruising or bleeding from the gums. High levels of Fibrinogen can be an indicator of cardiovascular diseases. You may also have high levels of Fibrinogen if you re pregnant. Low levels of Fibrinogen can be an indicator of afibrinogenemia, hypofibrinogenemia, or dysfibrinogenemia.

The treatment in case of Fibrinogen deficiency involves receiving certain Fibrinogen substitutes or blood products in form of intravascular injection. If you have mild bleeding then the treatment should increase your Fibrinogen levels by 1g/L and if you are undergoing surgery or have severe bleeding then it should increase Fibrinogen levels by 2g/L.
