Flurazepam

Prescription vs OTC : Prescription by Doctor required

About Flurazepam

Flurazepam is administered in the short term treatment of insomnia or any other sleeping problems. It belongs to the class of medicines known as sedative-hyptonics and works to produce a calming effect on the brain to help in inducing better sleep.

Flurazepam is a benzodiazepine derivative and works by binding to the benzodiazepine-gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-A-chloride ionophore receptor complex. This enhances the affinity of GABA to the GABA-A receptor site, causing an increased influx of calcium ions into the GABA-A neuron leading to hyperpolarisation and reduction of neuron excitability. This prevents the arousal of the cortical and limbic system, causing its sedative effects.
