About Isoflurane

Isoflurane is an anesthetic that can be used to initiate or maintain anesthesia. It is a colorless, clear, stable, non flammable liquid used generally to maintain anesthesia.

You should consult your doctor before taking Isoflurane if you have a history of coronary heart disease, or are allergic to it or any ingredient in it, have malignant hypothermia, or if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant or breastfeeding, and also in case of elderly people having a high risk of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). It is also advised to use Isoflurane primarily for maintaining anesthesia instead of inducing anesthesia as it may cause airway irritation.

The possible side effects one may encounter after taking Isoflurane includes respiratory depression, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, malignant hypothermia, hypotension, arrhythmias, nausea, vomiting, perioperative hyperkalemia. You should see a doctor as soon as possible if you experiance any of the above mentioned side effects.

Isoflurane is generally given through a calibrated vapourizer. It should be administered only by a medical professional. The usual dosage is 1.5-3% for inducing surgical anesthesia, and 1-2.5% with nitrous oxide for maintaining anesthesia.
