About Memantine

Memantine is used for the treatment of moderate to severe dementia (confusion) associated with Alzheimer's disease. It cannot cure the disease but it can help the effected person by improving his awareness, memory and ability to perform different types of routinely functions. It works on the substance glutamate in our brain by acting as an NMDA receptor antagonist, which may help in the reduction of the symptoms related to Alzheimer's disease.

You should refain from taking Memantine if you have any kind of allergy to it or any ingredient used in it. You should also consult your doctor before taking it if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding, taking any herbal preparations, supplements or any other medications, have or had seizures, kidney problems, liver or bladder problems, or any urinary tract infection.

Memantine do not have any major side effects but some common side effects you may experience after taking it are vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, dizziness, insomnia, headache, costipation, cystitis, drowsiness, hallucinations, and increased libido. If any of these effects continue for prolonged periods or becomes bothersome then you should see a doctor immeiately.

Memantine is available as liquid solutions and as capsules to be taken orally. The initial recommended dosage is 2.5ml or 5mg once a day for a week. After that the dose should be increased by 2.5ml or 5mg every week until it comes to 10ml or 20mg per day, beyond which you should not increase the dose any further. Also, from the second week, as you start increasing the dosage it should be taken twice a day in equal amounts.
