Mirtazapine
About Mirtazapine
Primarily used to cure depressive disorders, Mirtazapine falls under the category of anti-depressants. Though the functioning of thisdrug hasn’t been fully worked upon, it is thought to positively impact thenerve cell’s (of the CNS) communication among each other and/or regulate thebrain’s chemical balance.
However, if you are being administered tryptophan, then Mirtazapine shouldn’t be prescribed. Also, if you havebeen/have used any MOA inhibitor in the last two weeks, then it is recommendedto not take Mirtazapine as a potentially dangerous chemicalreaction might occur.
One thing to note here is that sudden and oftenviolent mood swings might result from the usage of Mirtazapine, also suicidal tendencies, for that matter. Forthis reason, the immediate family and other caregivers should be around thepatient to report any abnormal mood swings, symptoms or behavior. Mirtazapineisn’t recommended for children and those below the age of 18 years.
Remember to not discontinue the drug prematurely, otherwise the results wouldn’t be the ones that have been guaranteed; on thecontrary, side effects could swell up. Reduce alcohol consumption or quit itabsolutely because alcohol further increases the risks and side effects of Mirtazapine. Report to your doctor if you do not experienceany improvement in your condition even after using this drug for a month.
To ensure maximum safety, let your doctor know if you suffer from kidney or liver diseases, glaucoma (narrow angle), manic depressive disorders, epilepsy orseizures, a low B.P, high cholesterol count, angina, stroke, past history ofheart disorders or heart attacks, suicidal tendencies, drug abuse, etc.
Usually administered once daily right before bed, you could swallow the tablet along with water or just chew it till it dissolves completely. If you happen to skip a dose by chance, take it as soon as you can. However, if it’s almost time for the next scheduled dose, then there’s no pointin taking the missed dose again.
Take exactly as directed (do not increase dose or frequency); may take 2-3 weeks to achieve desired results. Take once-a-day dose at bedtime. Avoid excessive alcohol, caffeine, and other prescription or OTC medications not approved by prescriber. Maintain adequate hydration (2-3 L/day of fluids unless instructed to restrict fluid intake).
