About Neksium 40 MG Injection

Neksium 40 MG Injection is used in the treatment of conditions caused by excessive production of acid in the stomach. The conditions may include erosive esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Helicobacter pylori infection and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (tumors in the pancreas or in the upper part of the small intestine).

Neksium 40 MG Injection is used for short-term (4-8 weeks) treatment of severe erosive esophagitis (grade 2 or above), diagnosed by endoscopy and short-term treatment of symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) poorly responsive to customary medical treatment.

It is also used for the treatment of heartburn and other symptoms associated with GERD; pathological hypersecretory conditions; peptic ulcer disease; gastric ulcer therapy; maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis; approved for combination use in the eradication of H. pylori in patients with active duodenal ulcer.

Apart from that, it can also help in preventing stomach ulcer that is caused due to the consumption of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). The medication is available as a delayed-release capsule or in the form of a liquid suspension.

Belonging to the drug group of proton pump inhibitors, this medication blocks the proton pump in your stomach’s cells. When this proton pump gets blocked, there will be less production of acid in your stomach.

The dosage of this medication is decided by your doctor based on your age, the severity of the condition, your medical history and the reaction of your body after taking the first dose.

It should be kept in mind that this medicine is processed by the liver. If you have chronic liver disease, the body will be unable to process it well, causing a build-up of the drug. Also, this medicine can pass on to a child through his/her mother by breastfeeding. Hence, both pregnant and breastfeeding mothers must consult a doctor before taking the medication.

This medicine is approved for combination use in the eradication of H. pylori in patients with active duodenal ulcer. The most common side effects associated with Omeprazole include diarrhea, gas, vomiting, headache, nausea and stomach aches.

Although rare, certain severe adverse reactions are increased possibility of bone fractures, decreased magnesium levels inside the body, seizures, irregular heart-beats, jitteriness, muscle spasms and weakness, feet/hand spasms, voice box spasms, etc.

The likelihood of these severe side effects goes up if you take this medicine for over a period of 3 months. Also, prolonged intake of this medication (usually over a period of three years) can result in your body’s decreased ability to absorb Vitamin B12.

Other possible (albeit rare) side effects include diarrhea, inflammation of the intestine and the stomach lining, damage to the kidneys, allergic reactions, weight loss, and fever.
