About Penicillin

Penicillin is a type of antibiotic which is used for the treatment of bacterial infections like ear infections caused by bacterias such as streptococci and staphylococci. It was one of the first medications that were effectively used against infections caused by bacteria's.

Penicillin is prescribed for treating infections caused by susceptible organisms involving the respiratory tract, otitis media, sinusitis, skin, and urinary tract; prophylaxis in rheumatic fever.

This medicine is useful in treating active against some gram-positive organisms, few gram-negative organisms such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and some anaerobes and spirochetes; used in the treatment of syphilis; used only for the treatment of mild to moderately severe infections caused by organisms susceptible to low concentrations of penicillin G or for prophylaxis of infections caused by these organisms.

It is advised that you should not take Penicillin if you are allergic to it or to any ingredient used in it. Penicillin has been declared safe for consumption during pregnancy yet it is recommended that you consult a doctor before taking it if you are pregnant.

You should also consult your doctor before taking it, if you are already on any medication, supplements or herbal preparation, or breastfeeding, taking birth control pills, plan on getting pregnant, have any kidney disease, asthma, blood clotting or bleeding disorder, history of allergies or diarrhoea caused by the intake of antibiotics.

Some of the severe side effects you may experience after taking Penicillin include severe skin rash, peeling or itching, confusion, agitaion, seizure, unusual weakness, easy bleeding or bruising, bodyache, chills, fever, watery diarrhoea. You should immediately see a doctor if you experience any of these.

Other less serious side effects you may have areheadache, vaginal discharge, vomiting, stomach pain, nausea, swollen or black tongue. If any of these symptoms persist for long durations then you should see a dcotor.

Penicillin is available in oral dosage form and must be taken orally. The appropiate dosage depends upon certain factors like age, physiological and medical condition and so it is recommended that you consult a doctor for knowing the dosage that will be suitable for you.

Take at regular intervals around-the-clock, preferably on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after meals) with 8 oz of water. Take entire prescription; do not skip doses or discontinue without consulting prescriber.

Small frequent meals, frequent mouth care, sucking lozenges, or chewing gum may reduce nausea or dry mouth. Important to maintain good oral and vaginal hygiene to reduce incidence of opportunistic infection.

If diabetic, drug may cause false tests with Clinitest® urine glucose monitoring; use of glucose oxidase methods (Clinistix®) or serum glucose monitoring is preferable. This drug may interfere with oral contraceptives; an alternate form of birth control should be used.

Symptoms of penicillin overdose include neuromuscular hypersensitivity (agitation, hallucinations, asterixis, encephalopathy, confusion, and seizures) and electrolyte imbalance with potassium or sodium salts, especially in renal failure.

Hemodialysis may be helpful to aid in the removal of the drug from the blood, otherwise most treatment is supportive or symptom directed.
