Pizotifen

Prescription vs OTC : Prescription by Doctor required

About Pizotifen

Pizotifen helps in the prevention of headaches that occur because of a migraine attack. Although the drug is quite ineffective in the treatment of acute attacks of migraine or even tension headaches, it is highly effective for a light migraine.

In case of hypersensitivity to any substance present in Pizotifen, it should be avoided, otherwise it can result in a severe allergic reaction that can cause major complications. Expecting women and lactating mothers should discuss the positive and negative impacts of Pizotifen on their overall health and the health of the baby, before using it.

Meant for oral consumption, the drug is mostly prescribed to be taken at night, just before bed time. Depending on the body’s acceptance of the drug, the dosage may be increased to about 6 mg per day. It takes about 4 weeks for the drug to become entirely effective. During this period, Pizotifen should be taken regularly exactly as per the directions of the doctor.

Like all drugs, Pizotifen results in a few side effects like weight gain, nausea, fatigue, drowsiness, feeling dizzy, weakness and dryness of mouth. These symptoms are just temporary and will disappear with time. If they do persist get in touch with your health care provider right away.
