Pravastatin
About Pravastatin
Pravastatin is a drug that is mainly used to lower the amounts of bad cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. The drug is administered along with a combination of a healthy diet, physical exercise and some other drugs to be most beneficial to patient. The drug helps to prevent heart blockages and reduces of chances of heart attacks.
Pravastatin works by inhibiting an enzyme hepatic hydroxymethyl-glutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase that is responsible for converting hydroxymethyl-glutaryl coenzyme A into mevalonate in the liver, which is an essential step in the synthesis of cholesterol. Reduction of hepatic cholesterol levels leads to an increase in the uptake of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol or “good” cholesterol and reduces the amount of cholesterol in the blood.
Before taking Pravastatin, let your doctor know if you have or have had liver or kidney diseases, diabetes, thyroid disorders and alcohol addiction. If you are taking other cholesterol lowering medication like colestipol or cholestyramine, then take Pravastatin one hour before or four hours after taking these medications.
Some common side effects of this drug are headaches, dizziness, forgetfulness or confusion, tenderness in muscles, weakness, frequent urination, swelling in the face, or symptoms of liver disorders. If these side effects increase in severity, contact your doctor immediately.
