Prothionamide is a drug that is mostly used for effective treatment of tuberculosis. It may also be a potent medication in certain cases of leprosy. It helps slowing down the spread of the disease by inhibiting further growth of bacteria and other pathogens. There are significant improvements in condition that has been reported by several patients. The mechanism of working of this drug is similar to that of ethionamides.
The drug is available in the form of tablets, mostly for oral ingestion. This medicine belongs to the thiocarbamide group of derivatives.
The side effects of Prothionamide are commonly nausea, vomiting and severe bouts of headache. The drug may also trigger depression, confusion and hallucinations. The medicine may also lead to certain hormonal disturbances causing disruptions in the menstrual cycle. It may also increase saliva production, cause adverse reactions on the skin and sometimes lead to impotence in males.
Prothionamide is not recommended for women who are pregnant or lactating. They must also be avoided in patients suffering from diabetes, high pressure or severe liver disease.

How does this medication work?
Prothionamide is proficient in the treatment of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, M. leprae, and M. avium complex infections. With nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) it forms covalent adducts which inhibit M. tuberculosis and M. leprae InhA.
