Remdesivir

Prescription vs OTC : Prescription by Doctor required

About Remdesivir

Remdesivir came under the spotlight due to its possible usage to treat critical cases of COVID-19 cases. As per the WHO officials, it is the only medicine that shows any significant effect as compared to other available options. It is one of the drugs in the WHO unanimity clinical trials. However, it's the only manufacturer, Gilead is also organising the same.

Indian drug-making companies recently received the approval for the Drug Controller-General of India (DCGI) approval to manufacture and sell the generic version of Gileads Remdesivir for COVID-19 treatment in the country. Remdesivir is available in the form of injectable.

Remdesivir belongs to the class of antiviral drugs. It was first manufactured to treat Ebola cases in 2014 by a US-based Biotechnology Company. It was also tried to treat MERS and SARS, both the diseases are caused by the coronavirus family and showed promising results back then.

Coronaviruses, in terms of genetic engineering, have single-strand RNA. When this novel coronavirus SARS-CoV2 enters a human cell, it starts to get replicated with the help of an enzyme called RdRP. Remdesivir works by inhibiting the activity of this enzyme.

Currently, it is approved to get manufactured and freely available in the market. About six clinical trials are being done globally for Remdesivir. These clinical trials focus more over critically ill patients with low oxygen levels and the patients which are with moderate symptoms.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has waited for the results of the WHO clinical trials to make an assessment on the efficacy of this drug to treat COVID-19. And now Remdesivir is available in India.
