This is a combination medication which has Salmeterol and Fluticasone as active ingredients. It is used for preventing and controlling asthma symptoms and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease symptoms. These symptoms include shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, and chest tightness. It prevents breathing difficulties during exercise.

This medication acts as a long-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist. It works by stimulating the intracellular enzyme called adenyl cyclase, which initiates the process of transformation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to cyclic 3’,5’-adenosine monophosphate (AMP). This relaxes the bronchial smooth muscle and inhibits the release of immediate hypersensitivity mediators from mast cells. Fluticasone is a synthetic corticosteroid which binds to the glucocorticoid receptor with high affinity. It is also thought to inhibit cytosolic phospholipase A2, which controls the biosynthesis of potent inflammation mediators like prostaglandins and leukotrienes, thereby reducing inflammation.
