Sicastat 1% Solution is a biodegradable polymer which is water-soluble in nature. This medication after getting into contact with blood forms a gel-like complexes. It belongs to the drug acting over skin and mucous, under the class of an adsorbent and protectives. Also, it exerts a mild antiseptic action.
Sicastat 1% Solution is usually available in the form of gel, cream or ointment for topical administration. It is applied over fresh abrasions. The active constituent of this medication acts as a physical barrier as after its application on the skin, it stops the oozing out blood, hence protects the injured skin. Altogether, it prevents the wound or injury from getting infections and also aids fast healing of it.
The only observed side effect is a burning sensation. It is not yet known if this medication has any impact on pregnant ladies or fetuses, or on breastfeeding women. How does this medication work?
Sicastat 1% Solution acts through a three-way mechanism. It works via Haemostatic action, antimicrobial action, and hygroscopic action. In haemostatic action, it when come in contact with blood proteins (albumin), it forms biodegradable water insoluble synthetic complex, forming a physical barrier and prevents the capillary bleeding and blood oozing within 2-3 minutes.
Secondly, it causes the cell wall lysis of the microbes by acting as an antimicrobial agent. Lastly, due to its hygroscopic nature, it maintains the wound site environment and also the moisture content at the location. Thus aids faster healing and easy removal of dressing. Also promotes healthy tissue granulation.
