Sinopharm Vaccine or BBIBP-CorV
About Sinopharm Vaccine or BBIBP-CorV
The Sinopharm Vaccine or BBIBP-CorV has been developed by the Beijing Bio-Institute of Biological Products(BBIBP) in collaboration with the Sinopharm Vaccine or BBIBP-CorV. The vaccine was given authorization by China's National Medical Products Administration on 31st December 2020 while it has been given authorization for its emergency use against SARS-CoV-2 by the World Health Organization on 7th May 2021.
In fact, this is the first vaccine from China that has been authorized by the WHO. However, it has been approved by many countries, though European Medicines Agency is yet to give it the approval for its use.
Recommendations for the use of this vaccine in immunization have already been issued by the WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts(SAGE). As per the guidelines, the vaccine should be provided to people in the age group 18 years or above.
It is an inactivated virus Covid-19 vaccine. It uses a killed or inactivated virus which is made to enter the body by means of a vaccine. It is treated as a foreign antigen by the body’s immune system, which responds by the formation of antibodies, which in turn build up immunity.
The BBIBP vaccine should be administered as an intramuscular injection. As per the recommendation of SAGE, the vaccine should be scheduled for two doses, each of 0.5ml with a time interval of three to four weeks in between.
The efficacy of the vaccine is determined on the basis of clinical trials. The complete two doses of this vaccine, taken at an interval of 3 weeks, have 79% efficacy after 14 or more days from the second dose if we consider the case of symptomatic Covid-19 infection. The efficacy is 79% against hospitalization.
The efficacy results are still under trial for the severe cases of infection in people with certain conditions such as comorbidities, pregnancy, or age factor 60 years or above. Based on the results of the first phase as well as second phase clinical trials, it can be determined how effective the vaccine is.
In countries such as Indonesia and Turkey, the effectiveness is shown to be 91.25% and 65.3% respectively, which is based on the ongoing phase three clinical trial. The Effectiveness was 78% initially but has been changed to 50.4% in Brazil.
The benefits of the Sinopharm Vaccine or BBIBP-CorV can be described in a number of ways such as-
- It is safe and has been approved on the basis of clinical trials.
