About Streptomycin

Streptomycin is an aminoglycoside used in treating tuberculosis and infections caused by certain bacterial infections such as avium complex, mycobacterium, brucellosis, endocarditis, plague, burkholderia infection, tularemia, and rat bite fever. It works as it kills sensitive bacteria by stopping the production of the essential proteins needed by the particular bacteria to survive and grow. For patients suffering with active tuberculosis Streptomycin is often given together with rifampicin, isoniazid and pyrazinamide. Streptomycin is also used in pesticides, to combat the growth of bacteria which is beyond human applications. Streptomycin is also used to control bacterial diseases in certain fruits, vegetables, seed, and ornamental crops. Streptomycin, combined with penicillin, is used as a standard antibiotic cocktail to prevent bacterial infection in cell culture.
